Parts Needed For Installing Electric Trailer Brakes On a Utility Trailer With Dexter 3,500LB Axle

Question:

I have a 2015 Aluma 7712htilt utility trailer that I’m looking to install electric brakes on. The trailer does not have brakes. Do you sell a complete kit or have recommendations for the parts needed to complete this project. The trailer has one 3500# Dexter EZ Lube axle, 14” tires, 5 lug wheels on 4.5 and a GVW of 2990# Thanks

First you will need to verify that your Dexter axle has a Brake Flange # 4-35 to attach the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA. The brake kit includes both the left and right side brake assemblies which are self-adjusting for better performance and to save you on having to adjust the brakes every 3,000 miles. Next you will need 2 Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assemblies # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K to replace your idler hubs. These have your same 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern along with the EZ lube caps to access the grease zerk fitting.

For the electrical you will need a Junction Box # 3430001-JBK to wire in your current lighting wiring. You will then be able to add the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector # HM20087 which will carry the additional wiring needed for the brakes. The Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308 is required since you will have electric brakes on your trailer. This kit provides a battery to power the brakes and a disconnect switch to tell the brakes to activate in the event it disconnects from your tow vehicle. You will need additional Wire # 12-1-1 to run to both brake assemblies, Butt Connectors # DW05745-5 and 2 Ring Terminals # DW05741-1 for connecting the wiring to the power wire and grounding to the trailer frame.

I have linked an article below that will help you through the process and how the wiring is ran for the brakes.

If you do not have a 7-way or Brake Controller # RED52VR for your tow vehicle, let me know what vehicle you have I can help you with those parts as well.
