Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2009 Toyota Highlander

Question:

hello, I have a 2009 toyota highlander and dont have a hitch or anything for it. we just got an r-pod 171 2020 lbs dry given to us and would like to be able to tow it places. I think if I read correctly, I think I need this hitch receiver 13534. What other parts do I need? I have a brake controller, but I need a 7 pin wiring solution, the ball, the extension a dual one that I could also throw the bike rack on, and would like a transmission cooler to take the stress off. Am I missing anything? Finally, I would love someone around Arvada or Lafayette Colorado that could put all this on for me as I am not technically inclined. Please let me know what I need to order and if you know an installer near by. Thanks!

We have everything you need to get your 2009 Toyota Highlander set up to tow your new R-Pod trailer.

Starting with the trailer hitch, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13534 that you referenced is confirmed to fit your Highlander. This custom-fit, Class III hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver and plenty of capacity for the weight of the R-Pod. I do recommend also checking the Highlander's towing capacity as listed in your owner's manual. You will need to follow whichever limit is lower, the hitch's or the vehicle's.

Also note that Curt does require the use of stabilizing straps like # 18050 for non-trailer loads, such as the bike rack you plan on using at times. I have attached a short video demonstration on this strap just so you can see how it used.

Then, for a trailer wiring harness, you will need to start with a 4-Way connector if one is not already present. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118449 if your Highlander does not have the factory tow package, or the Curt T-Connector Harness # 56042 if you do have the factory tow package. Either harness will install by plugging into built-in ports behind the driver side trim panel.

Then, to convert this 4-Way to a fully-functional 7-Way, you will just need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This kit includes everything needed to make this happen, along with the necessary wiring and circuit breakers for installing your brake controller. I have attached a great article that details the installation steps for this kit.

For a ball mount that will work perfectly to both tow your trailer and hook up a hitch-mounted rack, I recommend the Curt # D210. This ball mount will provide you with a ball platform on the bottom and a 2 inch receiver at the top that will be used for a hitch-mounted accessory. Its 1 inch ball shank diameter will well with a 2 inch ball like # 63845 or a 2-5/16 inch ball like # 63847.

These components, along with your existing brake controller, are all the parts you need to tow your R-Pod.

To enhance your towing experience and also help to prolong the life of your Highlander, adding a transmission cooler like you mentioned is a great idea. I recommend taking a look at the Derale Transmission Cooler # D13503. This is an excellent, plate-fin style cooler that measures 11 inches wide, 8-3/4 inches tall, and 7/8 inches deep. You will just want to make sure you have enough room between the grille and AC condenser for the unit to install. I have also attached an FAQ on transmission coolers that you can check out.

As far as installing the mentioned parts on your vehicle, we do not have any specific recommendations for mechanics or shops nearby where you live. With that being said, any local mechanic with a good reputation should be able to handle these installs without issue. What I recommend doing is simply using the install videos and manuals I have attached to obtain an accurate quote from a shop.
