Trailer Hitch and Custom Vehicle Wiring Recommendations for a 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I have a 2010 subaru Outback wagon. The class II and class III hitches have the same tong weight and towing capacity. How does one decide which to get? Is it strictly how one wants it to look or are there other things to consider?

While some of the capacities are pretty close, the bottom line is that on the Class III hitches available for your 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon have a higher tongue weight capacity, even if the gross trailer weight capacity on some is the same. As far as looks, on all of the available hitches, the tubes will be visible below the bumper fascia.

I recommend going with the highest capacity hitch available because you never know what you might be towing or carrying in the future. The higher the capacity the more options you have for accessories like bike racks, cargo carries, and other accessories. With that said, I would go with the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75673. It has a tongue weight capacity of 400 pounds and gross trailer weight capacity of 4,000 pounds (always stay within the vehicle manufacturer recommended towing capacities). The recommended ball mount is # C45010. For a hitch ball, you will need one that matches the trailer coupler you plan to tow. Use # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch diameter, # 19247 for a 2 inch diameter, or # 63847 for a 2-5/16 inch diameter.

This hitch will fit all models except the Sport model. I have included a link to the installation instructions below. You also might be interested in the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, # 118467. This is a simple T-one harness that plugs in line with your vehicles taillights and provides a 4-flat trailer connection at the back of the vehicle. I have included a link to the instructions and a video installation below.
