Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are outstanding in serious winter conditions because the V-bar studs can bust through intense ice and packed snow. So, you'll be able to get to work and back home again even in the toughest weather. You can also use them if you ever go off-roading and end up in a mud-digging situation. These chains are going to help give your vehicle purchase to pull out and keep moving.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new snow chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. These will cause damage to your garage floor and paved driveway. If you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These can cause damage to your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing tire chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Cross chain connections should have the prongs facing away from the tire

2. Drape the chains over your tire, ensuring that the v-bar studs face away from the tire.

Connect chains on the back and front of the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Use tool to tighten cams on the sidewall chains

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

These tire chains for my 2017 GMC 2500 (20” wheels) perfectly. They did great in the snow and allowed me to pull an enclosed trailer to my cabin, which I couldn’t have done without these chains on my truck. Thanks etrailer for the fitment video specific to my truck! Very helpful

by:

Completely eliminated getting stuck. Plowing my place and down into the lower field the truck used to get stuck, just spinning on the ice, since installing the Vbar chains we are able to push the snow right down into the lower field without getting stuck

by: 02/22/2021

I ordered 2 sets (4 chains total) of these tire chains for my V10 F250, which I use to plow a private dirt driveway on the north side of a mountain in rural Pennsylvania. It's two miles (actual odometer reading) uphill to the paved road from my house. Most years, along about February, the road ices up (because no sun and midatlantic sleet issues) and plowing becomes quite challenging. I figured getting tire chains might help the traction-on-ice problem. I plow the road between 10 and 15 mph, with the truck in 4wd. Since buying the chains I have run the truck up and back the road approximately twenty times with the chains on, plowing from 4 to 8 inches of snow, conducting rollbacks of shoulder, chopping up slush, etc. I have also used the truck (with chains) to pull out two other stuck vehicles that had run into ditches. At this point I feel like I can review the product because I've used 'em enough to have an opinion. 1. These tire chains add a lot of traction on ice. A lot. Enough to plow with and enough to pull out stuck vehicles while the "tow" vehicle is sitting on ice. 2. The chains look fine and are undamaged at this juncture. Since I've used them consistently with how I expect them to be used and they are fine, I'm happy with quality at this point. 3. Maybe I will improve with practice, but it's about thirty minutes of twinking around to get these straightened out, on the truck, tightened up, bungee'd, etc. in a way that I feel OK about driving with them. (That's why 4 stars instead of 5.) Once they're on, they seem to stay put fairly effectively. I do not drive on paved roads with these chains nor do I drive faster than (max) 20 mph so I can't speak to how they might do under those circumstances. I use them for additional traction for my plow truck while plowing my iced-up dirt road... and for that, they work as advertised.

by:

These are really nice chains. I can usually get them all on with tensioners in about 10 minutes. Very simple to hook up. Another set of chains I have had used the so called "quick connect" with a huge piece that sticks out and causes concern for rubbing against brake lines and these do not have that and are way quicker to put on. I would definitely buy these chains again.

by:

These are a complete waste of money. Bought them last year and only used them once, they seemed to work fine. I didn’t need them for the rest of the winter. This year, on their 3rd use the cam tightener tool broke, really cheap metal. On their 4th use (needing a screwdriver and wrench to tighten the cams) they completely fell apart. 3 cross links broke on one chain, plus the outside latch fell off. Other chain seems fine which I don’t understand. Bottom line is after 4 uses totaling less than 30 miles, these chains are toast and I feel like an idiot for having purchased them...

by:

These are great chains and easy to install. I haven't had to use them much. The Cam Tighteners are an essential feature. You put the chains on loosely, then use the cam tighteners to cinch them down. You should also buy some form of rubber chain tightener to pull then outer ring together as you drive. I used the star type. You don't want the chain to be loose and whack your wheel well. I have a Tahoe with AT tires and the spacing inside the wheel well is small. These chains worked well.

This product was amazing it worked very well .
They are easy to install and they are easy to remove. they make plowing my driveway so much easier because I have a couple of low spots that fill with water and turn to ice and with these chains I have not gotten stuck would highly recommend them to anybody they also work well going down tote roads when I'm ice fishing. 5 Stars

by:

These chains Broke 3 cross straps the 1st time I used them within 10 minutes of putting them on. I purchase 2 pairs I will be returning you're returning the pair that is in jacket and requesting a full refund for all. I even used the rubber chain tighteners on the outside of my wheels these chains wrapped around my rear axle and damaged my brake linesIf you are looking for heavy duty chains do not buy these

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. When choosing tire chains it is important to first to check that chains can be used with your vehicle. Check if you need a limited-clearance snow chain - designated Class S by the SAE-, because traditional chains might not be recommended for your vehicle. Minimum clearances must be maintained around spring clips, fenders, braces, splash pans, fuel lines, brake lines, brake controls and wherever necessary. Snow chains can break during the course of their normal service life. They are designed for use in snow or on ice-covered road surfaces - not on bare pavement. Use of chains on bare pavement greatly increases the wear and chance of component failure of the device. Speeds faster than 30 mph also greatly increase the chance of component failure.

Had trouble getting out to get wood, a good amount of snow and ice underneath. Put on the chains and the old truck walked right through. We'll see how they hold up but I am very satisfied.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

They look and feel heavy duty. I haven't used them yet but I did install them to check for fit. Installation is a bit trickier than what's shown in the video. I found it easier to lay them behind the rear tire and back up over them for a short distance. I really like the cam tensioners you just have to twist as many as it takes to gain the correct tension over the tire.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Unfortunately the snow and ice missed us for a use review but fortunately we still have power because of that. These went on very easily and the cams worked great. Wear gloves the first time cause the edges of the cross links are still sharp. These went on the rear tires of my 2021 Trail Boss with LT265/60 R20

by:
2012 Toyota Tundra

these are nice heavy chains. however, i felt the workmanship was a bit under-par. the welds, especially on the twist links which form the cross-members were rough and when you add the galvinizing to that, they are difficult to lay out flat prior to installation. the rough welds hang-up and you have have to do some "creative twisting" to get all the links into proper position. this problem was only in a few places. but, i can foresee some frustration if i have to find those kinks in the snow and with numb fingers. i discovered the problem when i laid the chains out on my garage floor as i was inspecting the chains the day i received them. this is May and so i can't say how they will perform this coming winter. i expect they will do well, but chains, by nature, are a tangled mess when you first pull them out. it should not have to be an extra struggle do to rough surfaces.

Chevrolet Colorado

Easy to put on and they tear through the deep snow of the Colorado mountain trails. Great tire chain.

by:

Recently we got 12-14 inches of snow here in N.C. and put these chains on 1 day ahead of the snow.
Installation was very simple as especially since etrailer.com has the accompanying instruction video which was great. I couldn't believe how easy it was.
Then came the driving. We had ice first for a few hours and then the heavy snow.
I had a 14 mile round trip to make and here's what stopped me....NOTHING!
My truck drove on the snow and ice like a snow plow, never skidding, never sliding, and I was traveling about the recommended 30-35 mph., and even the steep country road hills made NO difference. My truck went up inclines and curves as if I was driving on dry pavement. The "V" bars on each link made all the difference, and I will never buy "regular" chains again.
Hats off to Glacier chains for ruggedly, well built chains that not only hold up and work well, but work better than I ever expected.

Chains arrived fast, great service as usual. Item looks good, but havent had the opportunity to use them yet.

by:

I haven't used the products but they look like what was advertised and the company, Etrailer.com was just great to get the snow chains to me in time for my trip to Mammoth Lakes. Luckily I didn't need to use the chains since I had some great tires but they looked very well built and at a very good price. The bags I plan to use on my inflatable 13" boat and they are well made and it seals with folds and velcro. Looks water tight. If you leave air in the bag, it will float and you won't deep six the items. The other items look sturdy and capable of doing the job as intended. I was happy with the concern exhibited by the etrailer.com staff. I would buy from them again.

Toyota Tacoma

Bought the Glacier v-bar chains for the rear tires in extreme conditions and the Titan cable chains for lighter duty, also to be installed on the rear tires. Videos show that the cable-chains can be installed on the front tires of a 2020 or greater Toyota Tacoma, though not recommended by the owner’s manual. These cables are S-class compatible so they should work on the front tires, however caution should be taken as appropriate. I would recommend only installing on the front tires after the v-bar chains have been installed on the rear tires and extra traction is deemed worthy.

Both the Glacier and Titan multi-arm adjusters were ordered in support of the chains.

Parts arrived as ordered in a timely fashion.

Have not installed or used these products at the time of review.

Can't say anything about life span as I haven't used them yet. Their build quality is good, and they are almost an exact fit for my 2012 Duramax with 265/60/R20 tires.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado

I bought a pair of these to carry in my truck after seeing another Chevy Silverado get badly stuck in snow in the Gravelly Mountains in Montana while elk hunting in 2019. Fast forward to the 2020 elk season, and I kept getting stuck and sliding sideways trying to get back through melting snow drift in the Castle Mountains. Once I put these chains on the front of my truck it crawled through the snow like I was driving on dry on pavement. They were fantastic. Unfortunately the back of the truck kept trying to slide downhill (I was on a sidehill) because I only had chains for the front tires, so I have now ordered a second set. I HATE putting on chains and have been able to avoid doing so for 35 years, but when you really need them they are life savers.
In terms of installation, these were very easy to put on, in spite of being stuck in snow and mud. The cam tensioners work great for taking up slack on the chains, but adding the Multi-Arm rubber adjusters really makes the chains fit tightly.

2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

They went on fairly easily, seemed strong and seemed secure. The problem was that the first time that we needed them, two of the chains came off and we lost one of them. My husband and I haven't used chains before... so maybe it was user error (hence the 3 star review instead of a 2 star), but we put them on according to the instructions... so either the instructions are poorly written or the product wasn't as good as it should have been.

Appears to be as described, however, I have not used or tried them on my truck yet.
I purchased them to keep on my truck. I'm starting a business with an RV transport company in Indiana just in case they have a load for me in snow weather conditions.
Great product so far.
I'm waiting for your Demco Auto slide fifth wheel hitch 21k to go back on sale.

I purchased these for my husband and will have to do my review in 2 parts. My husband has not had time to open the box the chains arrived in. I will address the service provided by etrailer.com today. I ordered the chains rather late in the evening and to my delight, I received notification that they had shipped my order that night. Inadvertently my unit number was left off of the order (my error) and again, late at night, I emailed etrailer and the next morning I awoke to a message that the problem was taken care of and I should get the order in a day or two. They were delivered that day. I ordered them 1/7/15 on 1/13/15 they were delivered. It took "longer" because of my error. I think I received superior customer service and still think that the time it took for the delivery (free) was excellent. Once my husband actually opens the box I will add to the review about the product. Customer service like this needs to be applauded immediately.

2013 Toyota Tacoma

This is my first set of chains that I have ever bought. I have a 2013 Tacoma 4x4 TRD with BFG All-Terrain 275/70R16 tires. I put them on today 7/26/13 and I must say I am a very impressed. The V-Bar chain is outstanding for off-road traction. I only tried them out on the rear wheels in about 12" of mud but I was able to get through without 4WD. I would highly recommend them if you are a hunter or if you do some serious off-roading.

  • Should 1 Set or 2 Sets of Tire Chains be Used on a 4 Wheel Drive Vehicle
For the best performance and traction in snowy and icy conditions, I recommend installing tire chains on the front and rear tires. I also recommend checking your owners manual for any restrictions or limitations that the vehicle manufacturer may have on the use of tire chains. If you choose to use 1 set of chains, you can install them on the front or the rear. They are typically used on the rear wheels, but you can also use them on the front tires for better steering and braking performance. I...

  • Do Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains Require Rubber Adjusters for a 2007 Toyota Tundra
The Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains, # PWH2828SC, use cam tighteners so rubber adjusters will not be needed. You will just twist the cams to pull the chains taut around the tires. I have included a link to our tire chain FAQ article for you. You will also want to check your vehicle owners manual to determine if there are any restrictions or recommendations for chain use.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation For a 2011 Ford Expedition EL 4 Wheel Drive
We have a wide selection of tire chains for you to choose from for your 2011 Ford Expedition EL, but for your situation, I would recommend either the Glacier Chains V-Bar Snow Chains, # PWH2828SC, or the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains, # PWE2439S, assuming you still have the factory tires and wheels. The V-Bar chains will be stronger and more effective than the cable style tire chains that you referenced on a gravel driveway or when plowing. They are made of low carbon steel chain...

  • How Many Snow Chains Do I Need for a Dodge Ram 1500?
Because you most likely have a 4wd truck in your 2017 Ram 1500, I would recommend putting chains like the Glacier V-Bar Snow and Tire Chains # PWH2828SC on all 4 wheels to help maximize traction, steering and braking. If you don't have a 4wd Ram 1500, you'll want to put the chains on the rear axle of your truck first and then you can add the front axle set if you feel the need-but they will need to go on the rear axle without question. Since snow chains come in sets of 2, you'll want...

  • How Fast Can I Go On a Snow-Covered Highway Using Tire Chains
First, if there are posted speed limits, make sure to obey those. We usually recommend traveling no more than 30 to 40 miles per hour with chains installed. The faster you travel the more wear you can put on the chains in addition to a higher chance of losing traction. Pewag and Glacier suggest an even more modest pace of 25 miles an hour or so. I have included a link to our tire chain FAQ article for you with additional information on the use of chains. Be sure to consult your owners...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for a 2011 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab 4X2 With 245/70/16 Tires
Your Dodge Dakota owners manual is the best place to confirm compatibility of any snow chains with your 2011 Dakota 4X2. I checked an online copy of the 2011 Dakota owners manual and it indicates that Class S tires chains only may be used and then only on rear tires of size 245/70/16. (Class S chains are specified for vehicles that have limited space in the wheel wells. This class of chains requires less clearance and so is the appropriate choice for most passenger vehicles.) The linked...

  • Is There a Way to Prevent Snow Chains From Damaging Chrome Rims
With snow chains there is always a possibility that your rims could get scratched or damaged. If I were you I would consider getting a spare set of rims with snow tires mounted on them. This way you would not have to worry about scratching your nice rims. Also, you would have a setup that you could get around in the snow with and would not be limited to only low speeds like snow chains do. This is what I do with my car and it works very well for me.
