Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 24" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have less space beneath your doorway, there are smaller step assemblies available with 18-1/4" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

40" - 48"AS05AS25

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

These stairs are excellent. They are very strong and not wobbly. Adjusts to the ground level easily. Very happy with these stairs. Easy to install. Wide enough. Easy to put away. Thanks for providing a great product.

by:

I really like the easy-to-use stairs for the truck camper. I drilled holes in the tailgate for the bracket that holds on the stairs. I keep the stairs on the floor behind the driver's seat (crew cab). To use, the bracket arms slip into the holes on the tailgate, then the stairs just hook onto the bracket. When the ground is uneven, I just slip a wedge under a corner for stability.

by:

Great steps, Every time I go camping someone will ask me where I got these steps. I tell them etrailer.

by:

The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps are a very well made product but poorly designed. It was a good thing that I am a metal fabricator. I had to totally alter where the steps met the camper, otherwise, there would have been a 6 inch gap at the top. After looking at other reviews, this seemed to be a common issue. Hence, the loss of one rating star. Regardless, the steps fold neatly and store nicely. I also designed, fabricated and powder coated a folding hand rail for added safety.

by:

Great steps for my Lance 825. Easy set up and use. After first trip for 3 weeks the roll pins that stop’s steps extension broke or fell out. Contacted brophy from website and their only suggestion was to put a bolt in place of roll pins. No big issue, didn’t affect use and can be easily fixed. Much better and safer than the step ladder I was using.

by:

Love the steps, very glad I went with the 24” width given height from truck bed is right at 41”, the extra width is good for stability and safer for the kids. Expedient shipping and no noticeable damage. The non-slip traction is nice but i question the longevity as some edges were starting to come up. Easy fix down the road however. Sturdy attachment, I’ll look to add a locking mechanism.

by:

Awesome steps they work very well very sturdy easy on and off or used it for my service truck to work out of since it’s so high I recommend this product

Very durable still holding up I recommend The steps 100 Let the owner of my old company know about it and he loves it too highly recommend the steps.

by:

Very nice and super sturdy. I bought for what may only be a one time use....but who knows. I want to take my mom on the road with me truck driving for a week. In the middle, I'll let her go gambling to stretch her legs. In all the years I've been over the road, she really hasn't even been able to see inside my cab because the steps are to high. Today I finally installed them (which was a breeze) and she easily climbed in and out of the truck without assistance. She was ecstatic....and even more so when I told her about the upcoming trip!

by:

Stairs came dented and the clamp that hold the scissor stairs compact was not properly aligned. (had to take the assembly apart and realign screw holes so that you don't have to remove the screws to unfold the stairs)

by:

This works great on my Lance 1181 truck camper folds down to fit in storage compartment for travel and rest on the top of my bumper when sits are not flat. None slip steps are great after a rain.

by:

Great quality steps. Certainly makes getting in our truck camper so much easier & safer- Even more so on our lifted truck camper set-up. Easy to install & remove, fold up to store when on the road. Thank you etrailer for the quick free delivery. You guys are a great company to purchase through. Totally appreciate your product videos. Keep up the excellent work!

The stairs work exceptionally well.

by:

Great customer support. They shipped the item within two days, I had a nice graphic tracking of my shipment, and it was delivered in mint condition. I replaced my 18" steps with the 24" steps and what a difference. Can't wait to get on the road.

I love these stairs! so does our dog! We built a wood platform that attaches to our tailgate before we put our truck camper in. They are easy to lift and install in just seconds. Great product!!

2014 SILVERADO WITH A 2014 NORTHSTAR POP UP CAMPER . 3 STEP MODEL WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUT THIS WILL WORK . THESE ARE VERY STURDY AND RAPID TO ATTACH AND DETATCH . VERY PLEASED

SOON TO UPLOAD PHOTOS OF THE 4 STEP AFFIXED . ENTIRE PACKAGE WAS A PERFECT MATCH . THE STEPS WORK WELL , HOWEVER ON MY NORTHSTAR CAMPER THE SPACE ON THE FIBERGLASS BETWEEN DOOR BOTTOM AND CAMPER BOTTOM ( 1" ) IS TOO NARROW FOR THE BRACKET ATTACHMENT . SO A SLIGHT MODIFICATION ACCOMPLISHED THE TASK . MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT I HAD PURCHASED THE THREE STEP STAIR VS THIS FOUR STEP VERSION . ANGLE A BIT LAYBACK BUT MAYBE ONLY I WOULD NOTICE IT . YOU JUDGE . GREAT , STURDY SAFE AND FAST ASSEMBLY UNIT . THANKS

by:

Great product/functions as advertised/safer and easier way to access our camper.

Well built product, I’m sure the Brophy camper scissor steps will be satisfactory. Probably outlast my camper. Perfect experience researching, ordering, and receiving the product. I really appreciate the way etrailer customer service helps, responds, and keeps you informed.

Really well built product! Planned to use it w my F150 and truck camper, but I should have gotten a 3-step. I haven’t been able to use the 4-step and I can’t exchange it, so now I’ll have to buy an F250 that sits up taller. Oh well, my fault, I should’ve allowed for more camper squat.

by:

They arrived on time and in good shape. I haven’t put them on my camper yet, but they look like they will work just fine.

by:

I purchased this item as an alternative to the factory steps. There are products out there that are similar that actually take the place of the factory step, which leave you having to store the factory step. If you were to upgrade to a newer or different rig, you would either swap steps, or let the new set go with the old rig and then have to dispose the old set. This system keeps the original steps in place and is portable. In fact, we recently purchased a new trailer and the steps came with us and work perfectly. I couldn't be more pleased.

by:

The stairs seem very well built and relatively easy to install. For our use on our camper, not only will it give my wife and I much easier and safer access, but also we'll be able to remove our often dusty, muddy shoes before entering the camper. Great product.

My wishes for improvement would be that the packaging and shipment be more considered. Mine arrived with the original cardboard package inside another newer box. The inner box however was badly banged up. This bent the hoop that is supposed to hook onto the mounting bracket. After a bit of fiddling I was able to straighten it. It seems to be working fine.

Great product, it's in the details.

by:

These steps are a great addition to our new truck camper rig, they are even easy for the pups to maneuver!

After 50+ nights camping our Brophy steps are working out great! We like their ability to adjust to different terrain and levels at the campgrounds we visit. We have recommended them many times to other truck campers using step stools!

by:

These are something I've needed for a long while. I use this truck for home repair and I go in and out of the back of the truck many times in a day. Even though there is a ramp it is very cumbersome.

The height measurement on the item you selected is 24 to 30 inches to the mounting bracket. As long as the distance from the area the stairs are to be mounted straight down to the ground is within this 6 inch range the stairs will work nicely. We have other sizes of steps (see links below) if this size is not correct for you. I have posted links to hand rails for the adjustable steps also. If I can be of further assistance let me know.

The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS05 that you referenced have a height of 40" - 48" when they are expanded which would be a little too much for your application. Instead, I recommend going with the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 which have a height of 31" - 39" when expanded, plus it features the non-slip tread. We have a bracket for a tailgate # TSSB or an RV # AS2002 if you need one as well as a handrail # AHR4 to assist going up and down the stairs.
