Video Transcript for Deka Lead Quick Disconnect Battery Terminal Installation - 2021 Chevrolet Spark

Hey everybody, Clayton here at etrailer.com. Here at etrailer, we install, test, and review a lot of different products to help you as a customer make a more educated decision before your purchase. Today, we're gonna be working on a 2021 Chevy Spark. We're gonna be taking a look at, and I'll be showing you how to install Deka's lead battery quick-disconnect. Now there are a lot of options that you can find here at etrailer for a battery disconnect. Personally, I like this one.

It's quick and easy and super simple to install. Our battery disconnect is installed right here on our negative terminal. We have one component, this one being here, that is permanently mounted to our battery. Then we have this quick-disconnect knob. All you do is turn this and you can slide that negative terminal off.

I'll take this off all the way so that you can get a better look. This part slides right over the top and you wanna remove it, simply just slide that out of the way. Now your battery is disconnected. Whenever you're ready to hook back up, take that terminal, slide it underneath and tightened back down that nut. All in all, this is a pretty simple product.

Definitely something that you guys can get installed at home. You don't need any specialty tools or anything like that. That being said, let's head in the shop and I'll show you how to get this installed. To begin our installation, we want to disconnect our battery. We're gonna do this using a 10 millimeter socket.

That's gonna take off our positive and our negative terminals. We'll pop open this cover and we'll have our nut right here that holds on our battery. So we'll loosen that up and slide off this terminal along with all of our wiring. And just rotate that down and out of the way. And we are gonna have another wire connected to our ground. So we'll get that taken off with a 10 millimeter as well. This is what our battery disconnect is gonna look like out of the box. And I wanna remove this nut and slide our pieces apart. Now this is what all of our factory grounds are gonna attach to, and this is gonna attach to the positive terminal. So now we need to make some modifications to make everything work. We're basically gonna have to take apart this whole connector. So we'll start by removing our nuts. Now you don't have to do this, but I'm just gonna remove the battery to make a little bit more room to work. We're gonna have a 13 millimeter bolt right here, securing the bottom so that that's taken out Now we can get our whole battery lifted out of place. We'll just kind of slide that forward and then lift up. We're not gonna be cutting the end off of our ground attachment here, you can use just regular wire cutters or a pair of tin snip. Our ground wire is gonna have this wire loom with electrical tape on here. We just wanna cut that electrical tape and kinda trim back that wire loom. You do wanna be careful not to cut that wire when you're doing this. We do have this metal end here. So we'll just wanna cut that right there at the end of the wire. It is kind of tough just due to the size of this wiring. Now, what we wanna do is strip this back. We'll grab our wire strippers and here we add our terminal. We do have this other ground wire that runs off of here, but we do wanna cut this little tab off just to make a little bit more clearance. Now what we wanna do is we're gonna take this ring terminal, set it right over here. I'll take that ground wire, kinda work it in, in that little gap. Then we're gonna have our plate, that's kinda squishes everything together. I'm gonna start one side of this bolt, just like that. And take that ring terminal again since it fell out, slide it through and get that other bolt started. You wanna make sure when you're tightening this down that you keep that wire nice and pressed up against this plate. That way, you don't have too much exposed on either side. Now using a 12 millimeter socket, we'll come back and kind of snug everything down. We're gonna take these wires and kinda push them off to the side. We can grab our battery and drop that back into place. And we'll go ahead and re-install that support plate down at the bottom. Now I wanna take our new terminal. We're gonna slide that over the negative post. I'm gonna angle it just a little bit to give our customer a little bit more room to actually take this off. And we're gonna grab a 13 millimeter wrench and just tighten that down. That nice and snug down and I wanna grab our lower part of our terminal, which actually has our wires. We're gonna slide that under here, kinda line it up as much as possible. We'll take that nut and tighten it down. Now, just wanna re-install our positive terminal and tighten it down. And with all that being said, that is gonna do it for our look at Deka's lead battery quick-disconnect on our 2021 Chevy Spark..

I am only giving this item four stars for a specific reason.
I recently read an article from an RV expert who stated something obvious.
A battery disconnect should always be put on the POSITIVE battery terminal on a negative chassis system.
I guess this includes most vehicular systems.
It is a shame therefore that this disconnect is made to fit onto the negative terminal.
It works having it on the negative and does isolate the battery, however there is far more chance of an accidental short circuit connection.
Which could be very dangerous.

OK I admit I was wrong and managed to get this attached to the positive terminal, where it has worked perfectly since. If I could I would upgrade this to five stars. I only use the trailer occasionally and therefore it does not get too much use but it has not failed me yet.

Works Exactly as Advertised!! Excellent & Extremely Fast Service!! Thanks SO MUCH!!

Really love these quick connects. work great! Got for tractor that the generator does not work, so charge a lot. After one year still working as when new, an save much time and trouble when had to use wrenches.

Product is exactly what I needed. Simple to install, yet does the job. We are setting up a car for flat towing and needed to disconnect the neutral battery cable. This product does the job with ease, plus it was shipped in a very timely manner.

Thanks for the help.

by:

The price is excellent. The material is durable. My nit-picky gripe is that the black knob must be loosened and then one entire half of the terminal must be removed. Other products - which, yes, cost a few bucks more - disconnect with just a quarter-turn of the knob. This disconnect is better suited for occasional rather than daily use. It's lead, not steel, so it won't rust.

by:

Works great on my camper battery to disconnect when not using the camper

by:

Only place I could find a quick disconnect for positive ground car!!

by:

Positive Batter Cable was short and would not reach other connector. This quick connect worked good. Save me from buying a new positive cable and having it installed.

by:

Simple to install, easy to use. These disconnects work as prescribed. Are made in the USA, and are very well priced. I will be purchasing more.

by:

Very pleased and happy with the durability
and quality of your products ..It makes removing the battery so much easier.. The time saved also makes it worth every penny..

Thank you ??

by:

Somewhat of a pain to unhook the two pieces to disconnect the power. Thought it would be more of a "turn the knob" and it would disconnect the power.

by:

I bought two of them and the first one broke in about 4 month. So have the second one on now so far so good. But I would like to say thank you for checking up on the product I bought. Because I am from Canada and cost me a lot of money. Thank’s again.

by:

  • How To Flat Tow Dodge Dart And Unlock Steering Without Draining Battery
You can prevent the battery from draining by unhooking the positive battery cable from the battery. This can be done by using a battery quick-disconnect like part # DW05312. You would switch the key to the on position so you can unlock the steering wheel and then use the # DW05312 without draining the battery.

Yes, the batteries on your 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 must be disconnected while in tow. However, the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch part # RM-766 cannot be used on vehicles with a diesel engine therefore you would need a manual battery disconnect like the Deka Lead Quick-Disconnect Battery Terminal part # DW05312. • Can the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect Be Used on the Negative Side of the Battery
The Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766 does need to be installed on the positive side of the battery, even on vehicles that state to disconnect the negative cable. Roadmaster released a tech bulletin about this and the reason is because if you use the disconnect on the negative side you'll lose your towed vehicle's main ground to the chassis. This means that all of the accessories that need to operate on the toad must be grounded through the connection to the motorhome which...

A standard 5,000 lb winch, like the ComeUp DV-5000si # CU645010, will greatly exceed the 85 amp rating of the diode so it would be useless.
