Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great service. I was redirected to buy product in stock rather than waiting a month for my order to be filled. The suggestion was an excellent fix to a longer lead time.
I am very pleased with etrailers business ethic and Carols excellent service !
Thank you. I will use etrailers again.

Here are some before and after pictures of a 1970 Apache pop-up trailer I've
been restoring. Some of the parts ordered from you are the galvanized roof
vent, 24" wheels and tires (which required raising the suspension 4"),
swivel jack. I had to wait awhile for the wheels and tires, but it isn't
quite camping season so I was planning ahead! The canvas was rotted so I
sewed new ends out of 1000D cordura.
I'm a cabinet maker, residential remodeler, and vintage motorcycle restorer,
so this sort of project is what keeps me off the streets at night.
Thanks

Ryan ordered the AM3S030 wheels and tire combo featured on this page. They only fit after he replaced the suspension for a taller set up. The wheels are 13 inches in diameter and have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern.

Im still very satisfied with my purchase 1 year later.

Could not be happier with my first purchase from eTrailer. Needed spare tire and tire mount for my recently purchased 1981 Scotty Sportsman. After looking at my local Tractor Supply and online I ordered the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range B and the MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier. On-line reviews and videos were very helpful! Package arrived with no issues. Solved my spare tire problem for less than $100! I am very impressed with the etrailer.com.

by:

I ordered these tires to replace some antiques I had on my kayak trailer. Two days later I had the tires sitting on my front porch. The tires and wheels appear to be well made, look great, and ride really smooth. Price wise they were cheaper with new wheels than replacement tires were locally. This is my second big purchase from Etrailer... and now I have a go to shop for all my towing needs.

Tires have held up well. Took them on a 2000 mile trip with no issues.....

by: 08/05/2021

I put lesson 20,000 miles on these tires mainly traveling for boating tires seem to heat up and the tread seems to melt away. I only tow it 65 to 70 miles an hour the reason I bought these tires.

There is a 5-year warranty on the tire and limited 1-year warranty on the wheel. Americana likes to handle all warranties. Their phone number is 800-225-4714.

The tires have been great so far and what I expected for my little utility trailer. Size, performance and appearance have been excellent. Very pleased.

The tires have been working very well and very happy with them.

by:

this is why i bouight those wheels and tires. this is my rampless motorcycle trailer. i'm not quite through i need to put a wind break on the front of it. it hinges from the tounge to load. the shock keeps it from slamming down when loading and also keeps it from unloading to fast. works very well and will load and unload nearly any where.

by:

I was really impressed. I just finished putting it together. High quality parts, excellent workmanship, all the parts and holes lined up. The items where packed very neatly and secure upon delivery, everything in heavy duty cardboard boxes and protected with bubble wrap where needed. Came secured to a heavy duty wood pallet. The metal parts are stronger then I expected and the paint was excellent. The nuts, bolts, washers, and pins were plated. Love the use of lock nuts every where. Wheels and tires were top quality. The one thing I would like to see is the last part of the instruction book cover assemble of the sides in detail. The diagram helps but if someone is not mechanically inclined, they will have to be careful. Fourteen inch tires and wheels would help, the trailer is a little bigger then I had imagined. All in all, this trailer is much stronger then my previous 4' x 6' trailer purchased from another retail store. Very happy with this product, somebody deserves a gold stare for design, manufacturing, and packaging.

by:

Rims are not very round, my wheels from 1977 didn't wobble like the new ones. The only reason i replaced them was to have spares. Tires seem ok, just quality of the rim I'm not impressed with.

by:

These wheels and tires appear to be of extremely high quality, definitely surpassing even what I was expecting. I am very pleased both with this product and with the service I received from etrailer.com. Thank you very much for a fantastic shopping experience!

by:

Needed two new tires and wheels....ordered these Loadstar tires and wheels...they arrived mounted, inflated and look GREAT!

I would recommend these if you need a 13" 4 on 4 wheel combo!

by:

Tires got here quickly and are exactly what I am looking for waiting on my spacers so they will fit trailer. Going from 12 x4.00 tires to 175/80/13,s for my mini offroad trailer will pick up over an inch in width and 4" in height

by:

Looked every where for some good tires for my welding trailer , found etrailer.com and got the best deal. Tires and wheels for the same price I could by the tires for around here. Excellent service and quick free delivery to my front door !! Thanks Ellen for being so helpful and pleasant to talk to.

by:

I received these way faster than I expected. They look great and the rubber looks like real quality material. The paint on the wheels is very well done. I haven’t mounted them yet. Still need to do the bearings and repair my side panels. If I’m proud of my work when I’m done, I’ll add a picture. I need another day. My original tires dry rotted after only 40 years. Go figure!!

by:

Just got my shipment so not sure about wear and tear yet but etrailer is hard to beat. There shipping is super fast and they give you updates as well. All products I have bought from them have been perfect. Highly recommend this business.

  • Is 4 on 4" Bolt Pattern the Same Size as 4 on 100mm Bolt Pattern
The 4 on 4" bolt hole pattern for the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel # AM3S030 is a little bit larger than a 4 on 100mm bolt hole pattern so they aren't interchangeable unfortunately. We typically try to avoid recommending wheels spacers simply because it means the tire/wheel won't be riding on the hub like it was meant to. What I recommend doing is looking for a wheel with an offset so that the wheel sits where it needs to, but can also provide some clearance....

  • What is the Largest Size Wheel that Can be Used with a 4 on 4 Inch Bolt Pattern
I do have options for you but before we begin you will need to measure the bolt pattern on your trailer. I have attached a help article for this. I know from experience that most of the Harbor Freight trailers use a 4x100mm bolt pattern and we do not have any options for this. However, if you have the standard 4 on 4" bolt pattern then I do have options for you which are listed below. The largest wheel we offer with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern is 13" diameter. We also do not offer studded tires...

Are you sure the tire size isn't A78-13 as that's a very common tire size and I could see the 8 looking like a zero if it was old and worn out. The modern size for this on a 4 bolt wheel would be the part # AM3S030 which has the tire size 175/80D13 on a white 4 bolt wheel that would work well. It has an overall diameter of 24 inches and a section width of 6.6 inches.

Sounds like you have the clearance needed for the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel # AM3S030 to fit. The wheel well width of 14 inches would be plenty wide as the section width of this 6.6 inches. Since the distance from your wheel center to the top of the fender is 15 inches you'd also have 3 inches of fender clearance which is the minimum safe clearance figure. I recommend staying with a tire size similar to what you have now, although since weight capacity isn't an issue, you can go a bit smaller. • Proper Tire Size to Replace F-78-14 tires on 14x5.00j Trailer Rim
The modern size equivalent for the F78-14 is 205/75-14, which are compatible with 5, 5-1/2, 6 or 6-1/2 inch rims. Try that size tire, it should fit. The 215/75-14 isn't compatible with a 5 inch rim, the rim is too narrow (I'm guessing that's what you meant by fitting too tight). I've linked to some trailer tire FAQ articles.

The modern metric equivalent to tire size A78-13 is going to be a 175/80-13. You won't be able to use any of the tires we carry though because they are for trailer use only. There is a difference between the way trailer tires are manufactured versus passenger vehicle tires. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. Passenger tires are built for cornering more with lateral forces in mind.

  • Can Larger Tires and Rims be Used Without Changing Hubs?
You can certainly change the sizes of your tire and rim without changing hubs as long as your new rim has the same bolt pattern as your current hub. For example, the Loadstar # AM3S030 has 13" wheels and would fit a hub with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. In addition, you will also need to make sure there is enough clearance between the top of your tires and fender; it is recommended to have about three inches between the two.
