Video Transcript for Review of CURT Electrical Tools - 7-Way LED Circuit Tester - C73NR

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt 7-Way to RV Socket LED Circuit Tester. Now this 7-way connector tester is going to plug into your vehicle's wiring harness to confirm your lights are functioning properly. You can see we do have a color-coded and labeled set of LEDs here that are going to make it very easy to distinguish your vehicle's signals. So, if we work from the bottom here, you can see we've got our TM for our tail lights.

We've got our LT for our left turn signal and our RT for our right turn signal. Those will both light up for our brakes, so we can check our brakes. We've got the BU for our backup, BK for our electric brakes, and then our 12V for our auxiliary power. So this will be very easy to operate. Just plug it right in, apply your turn signals, brakes, electric brakes, that sort of thing.

It will light up to indicate that it's functioning properly. We can loosen this screw on the backside that will allow us to twist that LED head so that we can get that lined up in whatever orientation is gonna be easiest for us to view as we are testing those out. So we'll just take a little bit of backing out of that screw there, and then we can twist the head to whichever orientation is gonna be easiest for us to see, and then tighten it back down so it always be able to make sure that we have a very easy time just to plug this in and then operate those signals, make sure that they're working properly. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com.

Thanks for watching.

This has been a reliable and useful product thus far. I use it every time before I tow. One time I had a blown fuse in the tow vehicle for the trailer lights and caught it before I made the trip to pick up my trailer at an offsite location.

by:

This tester is a must When troubleshooting trailer electrical problems. Just plug it into the 7 way socket and get the big picture of your harness output circuit condition. Quickly and easily verify the performance of your tow/running lights, brake tights and hazard lights. Must have tester for all Rv and trailer owners!

by:

Identified the electrical issue with the wiring.

by:

I had an electrical issue with my 5th wheel connector and needed to troubleshoot it. I immediately thought of etrailer and had the tool delivered to my campsite. Problem solved.

by:

It works, but I really haven't had a need for it.

by:

Arrived on time and in good condition. Seems to be good quality. Have not used it yet.

by:

After struggling with erratic trailer lights checking ground connection, light bulbs and possible shorts, I finally decided to check my truck connection. The curt 7-way tester revealed my trailer circuit breaker to the running lights was blown. Replaced it and problem solved. Took less than 5 minutes with the curt 7-way tester to reveal my problem. If I had already purchased this tester before checking out my trailer it would have saved me the 2 hours I spent diagnosing the trailer first. Outstanding product and a big thank you to etrailer for carrying this product. Plus the video provided by etrailer on their website does a great job explaining how to use the device.

by:

Swift and smooth experience

Just what I needed to figure out why our lights weren't functioning properly! Worked perfectly.

by:

The product arrived on time. Work's like it should.

  • Troubleshooting a Brake Controller that Only Activates with Manual Override Lever
If a brake controller only activates with the manual override lever one of two things are going on. Either the controller is not properly attached to the right stop light circuit, or the controller itself is bad. You will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the circuit that the red wire of the controller is attached to on your 2009 Ford F450. It will need to have voltage when the brakes are applied and none when released. If you verify that the controller is attached...

  • 7-Way Tester Recommendation for a Land Rover with 7-Way and P3 Brake Controller
Yes, we do offer a 7-way tester that will allow you to plug into the 7-way at the rear of your Land Rover to test all of the functions. For that you would want the part # C73NR.

  • Why Wont Running Lights on Trailer Work When Towing with My 2008 Ford F-350
Whenever a single trailer light function suddenly stops working with a tow vehicle like your 2008 Ford F-350, the first thing that comes to mind is a blown fuse or bad relay under the hood. I looked up the owner's manual for your truck and it looks like there's a 30 amp fuse in the #42 position and a relay in the #55 position inside the fuse box under the hood in charge of the trailer running lights circuit. Check to make sure these are still in good condition and replace if not. If that...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Lights and Connectors On 2002 GMC Yukon
The first place I would check is the fuse box. The trailer turn signals and trailer running lights are all on separate circuits. The fuse box under the hood is where they are located, and they are in the front closest to the stud on the right side. They're labeled TRL R TRN and TRL L TRN. You can find the diagrams for the fuse boxes on page 6-70 of your owners manual. If the fuses are blown, they will need to be replaced and you can recheck the functions at the connector on the back of...

  • How To Test Factory Brake Controller Function on 2019 Ford F-150
The only true way to test the brake controller in your 2019 Ford F150 is by connecting it to a trailer with brakes. You could use the brake controller's manual override with the tester plugged in to make sure that the signal was being transmitted to the pin on the 7 way, but you're really going to want to test everything out with a trailer installed to be 100% sure it's functioning correctly and providing the correct braking when you adjust the gain and such.

  • 2007.5 GMC 3500 Integrated Brake Controller Not Working
There are a couple of things you can do to try and troubleshoot your GMC 3500. First, I recommend making sure that the emulator you are using is compatible with GM trucks. The emulator that you mentioned # C73NR works only with some controllers. Sometimes, the LED lights on the emulators don't have enough draw to fully trigger the brake controller. A circuit tester with an incandescent bulb, like # PTW2993, will have enough draw to test the wires one the connector at the rear of your...

  • Troubleshooting a Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller that Wont Pair
Are you getting any kind of code on the handheld system that comes with the (discontinued) Prodigy RF 90250? One thing that might be wrong is that vehicles with certain late model European tow packages may require the use of a tester like part # C73NR or another truck or SUV to pair the receiver and transmitter. Try this out and let me know if it fixes your problem. If it doesn't, let me know what the year/make/model of your tow vehicle is as well as what wiring connector you have on your...

  • 2007 Toyota Tundra 12V Trailer Wiring Circuit Not Active
There will be a fuse and/or relay associated with the 12 volt accessory circuit of the 7-way on your 2007 Toyota Tundra. Check under the hood of the truck for that circuit and replace as needed. Your other option is to run a 10 gauge wire from the 1:00 position of the 7:way all the way up to the positive side of the battery. You would need part # 10-1-1 for 10 gauge wire (sold by the foot), and then a circuit breaker to install on this circuit like part # 9510 as well.

  • Parts Needed to Install Always-On 12V Power Circuit on 2018 Ford Super Duty
Ford did decide to change the operation of the 12V auxiliary power circuits on newer trucks. The fix for this annoying circumstance is easy enough. All you need to do is bypass the existing 12V circuit with a new direct battery connection that will allow the 7-way to have active 12V power at all times, regardless of the ignition key position or operation of the brake pedal. You will need just a few parts to accomplish this: circuit breaker # PK54540, 10-gauge wire # 10-1-1, ring terminals...

  • Flashing Trailer Lights with a 2008 Mercedes GL450 with Factory Tow Package
It sounds as if you have the trailer ruled out as the problem. I would recommend you check the ground connection on the trailer, to make sure it is connected securely to clean metal, so you eliminate that as a potential problem. I would then look at the connector on the vehicle. Try using a tester, part # C73NR to check if all circuits are functioning. If you find a problem at the connector, since the tow package is factory, not aftermarket, I would recommend you check with your Mercedes dealer.

  • Troubleshooting 12 Volt Power Circuit not Functioning on 7-Way After Re-Wire
There could be corrosion or dirt inside your 7-way that needs to be cleaned out before all of the circuits of the 7-way will activate. That's the most common reason circuits on a 7-way won't function properly. You can test this easily by using a circuit tester like our part # C73NR to test the wires that feed into the 7-way on the circuits that aren't functioning. If the wires have voltage but not the pins the problem is corrosion or dirt on the inside or outside of the connector. Also,...

  • Does Installation of the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Require a Circuit Breaker on Power Wire
No. You wouldn't need to install an extra circuit breaker from the # ETBC7 or # ETBC7L for a Tekonsha Prodigy RF # TK94FR since it will be drawing power from the 12v power circuit on your 7 way, which is already protected by a circuit breaker.

  • How to Activate 12 Volt Accessory Circuit on Vehicle 7-Way
Not all vehicles have the 12 volt accessory circuit ran on the 7-way. It's pretty common on a truck like your 2006 Toyota Tundra that it would not be ran. What you can do is run 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 (sold by foot) through a breaker like part # 9510 to the 7-way and you will have that circuit complete. You can check to see if your vehicle is wired for it currently by seeing if there's a wire ran to this pin already.

If you have a totally dead 7-way on your vehicle I'd first check all of the fuse boxes of the vehicle for trailer wiring fuses/relays and fix as needed. You can bypass the factory wiring and install a new 7-way but it will require some splicing and wiring. You'd want to first start with a 4-way so that you can get all of the lighting functions. For that you'd want the part # C59496. Then to convert it to a 7-way and wire in a brake controller you'd want the part # ETBC7 as this comes with...

  • Load Resistors to Correct Flashing LED Trailer Lights When Connected to Mercedes GL 350

Examine the fuse and replace if necessary. It's not typically possible to look at a relay and be able to determine if it's bad, but you can replace it with an adjacent relay to see if that activates the circuit. For whatever reason GM does not complete this circuit on all of the trucks with 7-ways so you have to do it manually. I attached a couple help articles that cover this.
