Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch DL24102 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number DL24102. This is the dutton lainson hand winch cable with a nice safety hook. It's going to be a 7 by 9 galvanized aircraft cable, very strong and durable. They're going to give you 25 ft of total cable length and the cable's going to have a diameter of 5/16ths of an inch. Here on this end here, we're going to have a forged steel hook, it's going to have the nice safety latch so that's going to prevent accidental disconnecting and unhooking. Spring loaded, so it's going to close automatically. Nice large hook, I'm going to take a measurement of that for us real quick.

The opening size that we're going to have, inside edge to inside edge, this point here to this point here, looks to be about 1 and 3/8ths of an inch. Very large opening, the thickness going this direction of the hook itself is going to measure about 1 and 3/8ths of an inch. Then if we measure thickness going this way we've got about 1 inch. Forged steel construction, that hook is going to be very strong and durable. Here on the inner part of the cable, its going to have a nice steel plate or metal plate. That's designed to allow the hook to rotate freely in there without causing any damage to the cable itself.

This is going to be able to work for hand operated winches up to 4,000 pounds. Safe working load limit for other applications is going to be 1,960 pounds. Then here on this end, you're going to have exposed cable, that way you can get it connected to your winch and operate it as necessary. You want to make sure to get that side secured again, it's going to have a diameter of 5/16ths of an inch, with an overall length of 25 feet. That's going to do it for our review of part number DL24102.

This is the dutton lainson hand winch cable with included safety hook. .

  • Winch Recommendation to Pull Boat Trailer Up Hill
On the Dutton Lainson # DL15721, the ratchet style two-way means that you will be able to ratchet the load in or let it out by ratcheting the handle, so when letting a load out the weight of the load will not just totally let go. This would be the style of winch I would recommend for your application. For a cable you'd then want the part # DL24102 which is 25 feet long. You'd have to attach the winch to the top of your post as the bottom of the winch is the mounting bracket. I wish we...

  • Will the Replacement Handle # DL70346 Fit the Dutton-Lainson Winch # DL14958
Boat winches typically can easily handle a boat that is rated twice their capacity as long as it is being pulled onto a trailer with standard carpeted bunk boards. If you are using rollers it can handle more weight but if you are using wooden bunks the ratio is much closer to 1:1. This means that the Hand Winch # DL14958, which is rated for 2,500 lbs, would likely be a great fit for your application! The great thing about this is that if you were to use the Dutton-Lainson winch then the...

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Use with 5/16 Inch Cable
The Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch # F142430 referenced in your question is designed to be used with 7/32 inch cable. I spoke with my contact at Fulton and he does not recommend using 5/16 inch cable on this drum. For a similar hand winch that can use 5/16 inch cable I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14825. This direct drive, heavy-duty winch has a weight capacity of 2,500 pounds and the drum can handle 47 feet of 5/16 inch cable. It also features a Zinc Tuffplate...

  • Dutton-Lainson B-Series Winch to Replace Shelby 5353 Winch
The B-Series of winches are from Dutton-Lainson, and there is a 2,500 lb model that you can use as a replacement for the 2,500 lb Shelby model 5353: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2,500 lbs # DL14958 This has an automatic brake, just like the Shelby winch, as well as a 3-1/8" diameter reel hub, which is the closest available to the 3-1/4" reel hub of the Shelby. The other thing you will need with the # DL14958 is the proper cable, the Hand Winch Cable...

You may want to consider the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook 5/16" Diameter x 25' Long - 2,500 lbs. # DL24102 for these winches.

  • Recommended Winch for Loading Cars On and Off of a Flat Bed Trailer
Pulling cars onto a trailer will undoubtedly require pulling the vehicle up an incline, which will add extra resistance to the equation. If you are pulling a rolling load, not dragging the car and no flat tires, up just a slight incline like a 3 degree slope the weight capacity of the winch can be multiplied by 6.67 times, see hand winch article, Winching on an Incline, which I have linked for you to review. A steeper incline causes more resistance and reduces the rolling load capacity...

  • What Determines a Hand Winch Minimum Operating Weight and Can it Be Modified/Lowered
I reached out to my contact at Dutton-Lainson and confirmed there is not a way to reduce the minimum operating weight required. Both the # DL15761 and the # DL14964 use the same brake pad and washer. However, # DL15761 (2,500 lbs) is physically bigger/heavier than # DL14964 (1,500 lbs) and uses two drive shafts instead of just one like the smaller winch. That is a big part of why it has the heavier weight requirement and heavier weight capacity. An even better solution for you than either...

  • Does Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Use Strap or Cable?
Hi! The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14825 does not come with either strap or cable. You would need to get those separately with either Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook # DL24249 or Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24102; both the strap and the hook are 25' long.

  • Can a Strap be Used with the Fulton High-Performance Brake Winch # F143201
I do have a solution for you to use a winch with a strap but unfortunately we don't have a 2D drawing of the Fulton High-Performance Brake Winch # F143201 and this winch is not compatible with a strap, only cable like part # DL24102. For a similar winch that does allow you to use a strap we have the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15721. This is also rated for 2,500 lbs and can be used with the Hand Winch Strap # DL24251. • Replacement For Shelby 5409B Trailer Winch
Shelby has long been out of business so you'll need to replace your 5409B winch, and for that go with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14830. This is a 2,500 lb winch with a brake which is similar to yours and for cable that works with it use part # DL24102.

  • Winch Cable Length Recommendation for 24 ft Pontoon Boat
A 25 foot long winch cable like the part # FWC3250100 would work great for your setup. This would pretty easily be long enough to get your boat pulled up onto the trailer. This is 3/16 inch diameter. The diameter you need though will be based on your winch. Other diameters we offer are the # DL24100 which is 1/4 inch, part # DL24102 which is 5/16 inch, # DL24047 which is 7/32 inch, # DL24043 which is 3/16 inch.

We have the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14830 available which has a 2,500 lb. capacity, is made in the USA and has a hole in the middle top. I have included a picture that shows the hole locations. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14830 will use a strap like the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook # DL24249 or cable like the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24102.

  • Recommended Brake Winch For Single Davit Boat Lift Application
I spoke with my contact at one of our winch suppliers. They told me that for the use you described and for a single davit used on a boat lift the best winch would be a brake winch. Depending on the weight of the boat you have the brake winch I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Self-Locking Brake Winch, part # DL15721. This winch has a 2,500 lb weigh capacity and has a fully automatic brake meaning the load stays in place even when the handle is released. This winch can handle up to 34 ft of...

  • Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Compatibility With Drill Drive Socket Adapter
The Dutton-Lainson # DL6456 Drill Drive Socket Adapter is only compatible with DLB series brake winches, so it wouldn't work with the # DL14730 winch you'd mentioned. Dutton-Lainson offers a 2500 lb capacity winch as part # DL15761 which is closest in capacity to the 2K winch you were looking at, which is compatible with the socket adapter. The nice thing about a brake winch is it automatically applies the brake when you stop cranking the handle but with the flip of a lever, you can play...

  • Pontoon Trailer Winch with Wire Cable Recommendation
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 2,500 lbs # DL14825 you asked from is able to use 5/16 inch by up to 47 foot wire cable. I recommend using the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook 5/16" Diameter x 25' Long - 2,500 lbs # DL24102 with this winch.

  • Is Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch With Strap Good Option for Boat
For a 1,500 lb boat you have made a really good choice with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14830. This is a 2,500 lb winch which will be plenty for your boat, and its hand brake is going to be really useful if you come up against a steeper ramp. The TUFFPLATE finish of the Dutton-Lainson winches is also going to be a boon for you since you are going to be in saltwater and freshwater because it has an extra layer of coating which makes it resist corrosion better than the standard zinc...

  • Replacement for Shelby 5470 Trailer Winch
Shelby has gone out of business and as such there are no replacement parts we can offer for your Shelby 5470 winch; due to that the best option is going to be a replacement winch. For this I highly recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14825 because it is a 2-speed winch like your Shelby and allows you to use either Strap # DL24249 or Cable # DL24102. This winch has a 2,500 lb capacity, comes with a 5-year warranty and is made in the U.S.A. I have added a link to a video review...

  • Is Dutton Lainson 2 Speed Winch DL14830 Good Choice for Car Hauler
Yes the Dutton Lainson 2 speed winch part # DL14830 would be a really great option for your Trailex car hauler. It has more than enough capacity so it will be easy to crank and since it's a 2 speed winch it gives you ability to crank faster when you don't need quite as much leverage or slower when you need more pull strength.

Yes, so long as your 1/4" cable is not longer than 45 feet, you can use it with the Dutton-Lainson B2500DL15850 winch, which is the following part number: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake # DL15850 If your cable is too long then go with the shorter 25 foot Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24102.

  • Hand Winch Recommendation for a 5,500 Pound Capacity Single Car Hauler Trailer
You can ask as many questions as you want, no problem! So, first, yes, you can use a pulley block to double the capacity of a winch at half the speed so you will not have to worry about that. With a rolling load though you may not have to. A rolling load, using a 2500 pound winch up as steep a grade as 45 degrees the winch capacity is 3,225 pounds at the first layer or so of wire rope on the drum. At a 26 degree incline you are looking at a capacity of 4,650 pounds. I have included a...

  • Winch Recommendation for 24 Foot Long Pontoon Boat that Has Auto Brake
When picking out a boat trailer winch in general the ratio of weight capacity to boat weight is 2:1 and most 24 foot pontoons like yours are 1,200 lb so you could pretty easily get a way with a 600 lb winch. But if you have a long winching distance and wooden bunks the ratio goes to right at 1:1. That said, the higher rated the winch the easier is to handle, and since you want an auto brake I'd highly recommend the very high quality and easy to use Dutton Lainson Winch you mentioned part...

  • Winch Recommendations for a 2,250 lb Boat
Generally speaking to boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good roller and short winching distances the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but if you have long winching distances and wooden bunks the ratio is 1 to 1. Lets say you fit the typical setup and the ratio would be 2 to 1 the Pro Series Hand Winch # PSKR10000301 would not have the capacity as it would only have 2,000 lbs of capacity with this ratio and you would need 2,250 lbs.
