Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2017 Subaru Outback wagon, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the CURT Class 3 Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver. Here's what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed on our Outback. The cross tube is going to be completely hidden. It's going to have a really nice, clean appearance to it because all we're going to see is that receiver tube sticking out.Our hitch is going to give us a 2" x 2" receiver tube opening, so we're going to have a really wide variety of accessories that we can mount up, anything like a bike rack, cargo carrier or even a ball mount to tow a trailer. The way we're going to mount any of those accessories is through the hitch pin hole here on the side. Now our hitch is going to accept a standard 5/8ths pinning clip. more

Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon C13206

Brian: Hey, guys. Brian here at etrailer.com. Here, we have our Curt hitch installed on our Subaru Outback wagon. As you can see, even though the hitch is visible, it does flow nicely with the body lines of our Subaru. Now, one of the things I really like about this hitch on our Subaru is that it actually comes out just a little bit past our rear bumper. Well, that means we're gonna have great clearance when we're using accessories, things like our bike rack or a cargo carrier. more

Today, we have our Curt 1-1/4" hitch on our Subaru Outback Wagon. Now this is going to be a great choice for you if you already have 1-1/4" accessories because they'll work directly with your new hitch. Now even though this hitch is mostly visible from behind the car, one of the things I really like about it is where the receiver tube opening sits. It actually sits about flush with the back of the bumper. And what that's going to allow you to do is not have really any issues as far as clearance go with any accessories you might have on the back, like a bike rack or a cargo carrier. Now, this is a Class II hitch, which is going to utilize that 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" opening. That's something to keep in mind when using it for everything other than non-trailer loads. more

Before we do this, though, we'll install a safety strap to support the exhaust once the three rubber hangers have been removed. There's two at the muffler and one a little bit farther forward in the center of the vehicle. We use a little bit of spray lubricant and a large pry bar to remove the three rubber exhaust hangers. Now with our exhaust lowered down out of the way, we need to remove the heat shield. There's a total of four bolts that will need to be removed in order for the heat shield to come down. Now that we have the heat shield down out of the way, we're going to have to trim a small section of it off in order for the hitch to clear. We'll use this paint marker here to mark out the area that we'll need to trim off. more
