Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2013 Ford Van

Rob: Hey everybody, Rob here at etrailer.com, and today we're going to be taking a look at the Tekonsha Primus IQ brake controller on our 2013 Ford van. The Primus IQ is going to be a really good example of a traditional style brake controller, where we are going to have this small box mounted to the dash. Now I particularly like this one because it doesn't have too many fancy whistles, but it's going to do exactly what we need it to. It's going to send a signal from our van back to our trailer and apply the brakes. What's really nice is this is a proportional brake controller, which means it's going to be sending those signals in the exact same time and intensity that we apply the brakes they're going to send that to the van, opposed to some of the older style ones which we're time delayed, which there was just a preset time and then it would send the brake pressure back and apply the brakes. This is not going to be putting the brakes on if we don't need it. If we're sitting in a stoplight, have our foot on our brake, it's not going to be applying the brakes because it's going to realize that we're not moving. more

In conjunction with this installation, we'll also be using a couple of other parts, one of them is an adapter 4-Pole to a 7-Pole and 4-Pole from Hopkins, part number 37185. As well as a 6 and 7-way trailer connector mounting box for round and square tube trailer hitches from Draw-Tite, part number 18159. Now due to the size of the hitch that's on this vehicle and not a good area to mount the 7 and 4-Pole, we're going to go ahead and use the 6 and 7-way trailer connector mounting box. To do this though, you'll need to get some different screws because the 7 and 4-Pole plug that we're using is a little bit wider than what the box was intended for. It comes with some self-tappers but we want to add and we ended up having to use just some screws and nuts in them to tighten it down. more

All right today on this 2000 Ford van were going to install part number HM47297 just a Hopkins Insight Flex Mount trailer brake controller. Okay first thing we need to do is go ahead and find the location of the brake controller itself. In this case were going to be underneath the dash, on the drivers side, right behind the brake pedal. To mount our brake controller we need to make sure that the sticker side is towards the inside wall and that the cables are pointing towards the front of the vehicle. That ensures that the brake controller is positioned in the correct way.To install this were going to loosen up the wire harness thats behind the brake pedal. Well pull it up and out of the way and then itd be a good idea to do a test-fit to show where our brake controller will fit.All right, once we know where its going to go, well go ahead and clean up the sheet metal behind it. Well use adhesive to help hold it in place. Now well set our brake controller to the side and then were going to use an adaptor cord to plug into the vans tail package port. more
