To install the Thule Canyon XT Roof Mounted Cargo Basket # TH859XT that you referenced you will need to first decide on a roof rack on your 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
If your Grand Cherokee has existing side rails that run front to back on your roof, then I recommend the Rhino Rack system that includes the # RRVA118B-2 and # RRSX100. In this system the # RRVA118B-2 is the Rhino Rack Black Vortex Aero style of crossbars. The # RRSX001 is the SX series leg kit that connects the crossbars to your existing raised rails. If you would prefer you can also use the # RRVA118S-2 crossbars that are Silver.
If your Grand Cherokee does not have factory installed crossbars, and has a naked roof then I recommend the Malone SteelTop Roof Rack, part # MPG201.
The weight capacity of the Thule Canyon XT Roof basket # TH859XT is 150 pounds, and the weight capacity of the previously mentioned roof racks is 165 pounds. Please make sure that you check the weight capacity of your Grand Cherokee by checking in the owners manual or with your local dealership to verify that you do not exceed the weight capacity of your roof. For the weight limit of your entire system you will want to make sure that you abide by the lowest rated component of the system.
If you already have a crossbar system on your Grand Cherokee then you will want to measure the crossbars and make sure the # TH859XT will fit. It will accommodate crossbars that are spread between 20 inches and 37 inches.
For installing and loading your cargo basket you may also be interested in a cargo step like the # HE4040.
All the prices are listed on each individual product page, and on the links below. I have included several videos that show the install of these products for your reference.
