Brake Controller and Wiring Recommendation for a 2006 Ford Explorer with Factory 4-Way
Question:
I have a 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with a factory class IV hitch and 4-pin connector and would like to add a 7 pin connector with bracket. I like the idea of a 4 pin/7pin combo as I need to keep a 4pin connection. Is there a harness available for my vehicle that plugs into the oe plug and provides wiring for both 4pin and 7 pin or is hard wiringinch the brake and 12v the only option. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you provide.

What you will need to install a 7-way/4-way on your 2006 Ford Expedition would be the Hopkins Adapter part # 37185. Your current 4-way will plug into the 4-way of this adapter and will connect to the vehicle's tow package wires which are along the rear frame rail (if present).
Check out the two picture I attached to determine if you have the tow package wiring on your vehicle plus the FAQ article I attached as well on installing a brake controller in a vehicle such as yours.
If you have the tow package wiring you will need two other components to install a brake controller though. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. Then for a harness to install the controller you will want the part # 3035-P.
If you do not have the tow package wiring you would instead of the # 37185 want the # ETBC7. I attached install instructions plus an install video.
