Can Free-Backing Hydraulic Brakes Be Installed as Replacements on Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 1997 Dorsey tandem axle boat trailer with Hydraulic surge Drum brakes on one axle, It has an Atwood coupler 83000 manual lockout reverse and I recently replaced the master cylinder and found that the wheel cylinders were leaking. I am now looking to replace the brake assemblies and I need to find out if Titan T4071600 and T4071500 Freebacking brakes are compatible? or do I need the regular non-freebacking versions T1878700 and T1878800? Thanks! p.s. the original brakes are 10inch x 2.25inch with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern.

You absolutely can install free-backing hydraulic drum brakes on your trailer. These will make reversing your trailer for loading and unloading a much easier process. You will want to make certain that you match not only the brake size but also the axle weight rating and mounting pattern.

We offer free-backing brakes from Demco for 3500-lb axles, parts # 40716 and # 40715, as well as the Titan units you referenced, parts # T4071600 and # T4071500.
