Reducing Engine Oil Temperature Using Derale Tube-Fin Engine Oil Cooler Kit # 15505
Question:
Reduces the temp by as much as 50 degrees? If it has a thermostat, wouldnt this prevent the oil from dropping too low. Oil temp needs to stay high enough to burn out the condensation in the oil.

Expert Reply:
Typically a system like the Derale Tube-Fin Engine Oil Cooler Kit, # D15505, is used on vehicles where high oil temperatures are a concern, like one that is towing during the summer months.
The thermostatic adapter will allow oil that is cooler than 180 degrees to bypass the cooler.
The temperature of the oil when it entered the cooler will vary depending on the outside temperatures, driving conditions, how the system is set up, etc. Allowing the oil to flow through the tubes cools the oil but due to multiple variables, there is no guarantee as to the exact drop in temperature. As soon as the oil temperature drops to below 180 degrees it will bypass the cooler.
