2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited Brake Controller Installation

Question:

This Jeep now has a round 6 pin trailer plug. I am going to pull a Scamp RV tailer 2000 lbs so I want to install a brake controller, a 7 blade trailer connection, and a I need to run the hot wire to the trailer plug to charge the trailer battery while travelling. What do I need? Also, I am not clear about the circuit breaker that is needed in the hot wire to charge the trailer battery. Does it only allow current to flow one way? Will the circuit breaker keep my Jeep battery from being discharged when the Jeep is not running? I think I want to use e time delay brake controller. This seems less complicated than the proportional controllers. Thank you.

If the round 6-way on your 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is fully functional it has a 12 volt power circuit. You would just need to use the correct adapter to go from a 6-way to a 7-way or you would need to remove the 6-way and install a 7-way in place of it. If you have a 6-way without the circuit run you would need use a circuit breaker like the # PK54540 and 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1.

Instead of this the easiest route would be to just get a Universal Brake Controller Install kit part # ETBC7 as it comes with everything needed to convert your current trailer wiring to a 7-way and install a brake controller.

The circuit breaker basically just acts like a fuse and does not stop back feeding or anything else like a diode. When the circuit draws more than 40 amps the breaker opens the circuit temporarily like a fuse would but instead recloses after a certain amount of time.

Proportional brake controller are actually pretty easy to setup and use. Time-delayed require much more adjustment and monitoring so I wouldn't recommend one.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.
