Do the U-Bolts of the Curt Roof Cargo Basket part # C18115 Protrude Into the Basket Area

Question:

From the photos of the Curt C18115, it appears the threaded ends of the U-bolts protrude into the cargo area of the rack, potentially tearing any cargo that could move around e.g., held down by bungee netting. Yet people seem to be very happy with the rack. Do the bolts protrude? And, if so, how do people keep the cargo from being damaged?

Expert Reply:

The ends of the U-bolts of the Curt Roof Cargo Basket part # C18115 that you referenced do protrude slightly into the cargo space of the basket. The wing nuts are pretty rounded without any sharp corners so cargo shouldn't get damaged. Also, most cargo that would get carried on the roof of a vehicle wouldn't exactly be considered fragile so the U-bolts don't pose an issue.
