Using Weight Distribution Hitch on 2014 Honda Pilot 4WD Touring to Pull Coleman Trailer

Question:

Hello, It currently own a 2014 Honda Pilot Touring 4WD 4500 GVWR and am about to purchase a Coleman CTE171 Hybrid trailer with the following specs: Unloaded Weight 3,103, Hitch Weight 310, Cargo Capacity 747,,Height 9foot 11,,Length 18foot 7 What hitch set up would you recommend? I know Honda does not recommend a weight distro hitch due to safety reason if improperly set-up. Thoughts? Thanks so much!

Generally a weight distribution hitch is called for when the trailer weighs half or more of the tow vehicle's weight. This condition applies in your case. However, as you noted, the (online) edition of the owner's manual for the 2014 Honda Pilot indicates on page 336 that weight distribution systems are not recommended and that improperly adjusted ones 'may reduce handling, stability and braking performance'. Unfortunately the manual does not offer any comment about a properly adjusted system!

Due to the somewhat ambiguous nature of these warnings I suggest you consult your local dealership for concrete clarification of the reasons behind the statements in the manual. The vehicle maker does get the final word on usage of their product.

For reference I have linked you to an article on weight distribution that will give you all of the essentials.
