Will 8-1/2 Inch Drawbar Generate Trailer Sway
Question:
I have a new tow vehicle on which my tow bar fits, but it just seems too long as the Curt hitch protrudes almost to the edge of the bumper. It is approximately 8 1/2inch from pin to ball hole. My next shortest draw bar would be the Curt #45518 and a little less than 2. Is there a specification to follow or is this a matter of personal preference. I seem to recall from when I started towing 10 years ago that a long draw bar length generated trailer sway. Your thoughts?

Expert Reply:
A drawbar that is 8-1/2 inches long from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of ball hole is considered the standard length. For most applications, a standard length ball mount will offer the right amount of clearance to couple a trailer to the ball and will not generate trailer sway.
I have included a FAQ article about choosing the correct ball mount/drawbar for you to check out.
