Trailer Hitch Recommendation For 2014 Honda CR-V

Question:

I was thinking of buying a CRV with the hopes of doing some moderate towing expectations. Then I found that there is a 150# tongue and 1,500# towing limit for the CRV. That translates to a Class I hitch, but I see a Class III hitch being recommended. Isnt that both overkill and potential for danger if somebody saw the Class III hitch and overloaded the vehicle? I am a bit confused.

Hitch ratings are based on the design and structure of the hitch. One hitch may fit several different make and models of vehicles so although the hitch might have a high weight capacity, the vehicle towing capacity is what you will want to go by when looking for a hitch for a vehicle. We try to make sure each customer is aware that they need to find what the weight capacity is for their vehicle and choose the items that fall within those capacities.

For a 2014 Honda CR-V, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C13119. This is a Class lll hitch and has a 2 inch receiver opening, which gives you a few more options when looking for items that will fit the hitch.

To tow with your CR-V, you will need a ball mount and a trailer hitch ball. If you do not have the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle, wiring is also something that will need to be added for towing.

The ball mount I recommend is part # 2753. This ball mount fits 2 inch receivers and provides a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop from the top of your hitch's receiver tube.

For a 1-7/8 inch ball I recommend part # 19260, and for a 2 inch ball, part # 63845.

If a 4-way connector is needed at the rear of your CR-V, I recommend the CURT T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # C56158. This harness Installs quickly and easily - simply plugs in to factory connectors, and does not require cutting or splicing.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the connectors and helps prevent corrosion.

All non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with a stabilizing strap like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from CURT.

I have attached a couple of videos you may want to check out.
