Since your 2001 Ford Explorer XLT did not come with a factory trailer connector you have a couple of options for wiring harnesses. There are hardwire options and T-connector options for your Explorer. For a hardwire option you can use # C59236. You would need to use the included circuit tester to test the vehicle tail light wiring to determine the functions and connect the wiring harness accordingly.
For a T-connector harness, one that plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring, you can use # 118345.
Both of the above harnesses require a direct connection to the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights. This connection also offers another level of circuit protection between the vehicle and trailer wiring. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to our help article with tips on routing the power wire.
Harness # 118344 does not fit the 2001 Ford Explorer XLT 4-door.
