Car Hauler trailer Wiring
Question:
In reference to the below conversation - #78716 is exactly what my trailer currently has. The problem is that the cord frequently drags the ground when the trailer is weighed down, but if it was any shorter it would over-extendinch on tight turns and become disconnected. I have tried adjusting it and playing with different lengths, and everything I try is lose-lose. So I am confident that the solution will come in the form of a coiled adaptor/harness. Please let me know if you have anything that will work, thanks! Question: I understand that this cord uses 16-gauge wires. Does this cord have 4 or 7 wires running through it? I plan to cut off the 4-prong end of it and splice into my enclosed car trailer with 2 axles and electric brakes, and want to make sure that I do not lose any functions. asked by: Ted Expert Reply: The Coiled Adapter # 787196 has 5 wires that run through it. A ground wire, a running light wire, a left stop/turn wire, a right stop/turn wire, and an auxiliary wire usually run to the reverse light circuit of a vehicle. For what you are doing you would be better off using a 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20046 since it has all 7 circuits and the brake output circuit wire has 12 gauge wire instead of the 16 gauge wire of the # 78716 which would not be sufficient.

For you to retain the functions of the electric brakes on your car hauler trailer you will need to use a connector that will carry the power for all of the functions from the vehicle. For what you are doing you would be better off using a 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20046 since it has all 7 circuits and the brake output circuit wire has 12 gauge wire.
I have attached a video that shows how to replace the 7-pole connector you can check out.
