Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 with a Blue Ox Aventa LX Tow Bar
Question:
I am looking to tow my 2005 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 with the 10,000 lb blue ox avail tow bar. Can I use the BX 1682 base plate on this configuration? What else should I buy for this application?

Expert Reply:
For your 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 you will actually need Blue Ox base plates # BX1660. These base plates are compatible with the Avail tow bar # BX7420.
The tow bar comes with safety cables so you will not need to order any extra. But you will need a lighting solution and supplemental braking.
For lighting, if you will not be towing the Sierra often I recommend a magnetic kit # RM-2120. But if you will be towing it often then I recommend a more permanent solution, the 4-diode kit # RM-154.
And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the easiest systems to set up and use is the Even Brake proportional system # RM-9400. It will apply the Sierra brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the easiest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
Be sure to consult your Sierra owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
