Hanger Kit Recommendation for a Tandem Axle Trailer with Double Eye Springs and 5,200 lb Axles
Question:
I have a tandem car trailer that used to have 3500lb axles without electric brakes. I put in 2 5200lb axles with electric brakes. The trailer is home made but has 6inch channel for the frame, so I wasnt worried about overloading, I wanted the electric brakes and the 5200lb axles were available. Since the 5200lb axles have a bigger tube, I have only one inch of travel before the axle tube hits the trailer frame. The springs are mounted under the axles in both cases. I dont want to mount the tubes on top of the axles as that would make the trailer too high. Whats the tallest hanger kit you offer? Aware there any tips/tricks to ensure the hangers are welded parallel? Do you have any other suggestions to provide for more travel? What I have now: 5200lb axles, on bottom of axle tube 1.75inch wide double eye leaf springs, 25.25inch long eye to eye Front/rear hanger from mounting surface to hole: 1.25 Middle hanger from mounting surface to hole: 3.25 Thanks!

The hanger kit that I recommend for your trailer is part # APT5. This is the recommended hanger kit for tandem axle trailers with double eye leaf springs and 5,200 lb axles. This kit comes with six 3-1/4 inch tall hangers, shackle bolts, shackle straps and 7-3/4 inch long x 2-7/8 inch tall equalizers. This should give you the clearance you need between your axle and frame.
Welding hangers can be tricky. The best way to make sure the hangers are welded parallel is to measure and use a strong clamp. Make sure the clamps are square to the frame rails and to the frame itself. If you can mark the position of your current hangers, you should be able to weld the new hangers in the exact same spot as long as you grind off the old metal. I strongly recommend making sure the hangers are square to either the front or back corners of the trailer.
