Recommended Hitch, Trailer Wiring and Brake Controller for 2004 Dodge Dakota
Question:
I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota without the factory tow package. My trailer had electric brakes and a 7-wire round plug. I need to purchase a brake controller for the trailer and a wiring harness for the truck, and a hitch receiver. All of the wiring harnesses I see on your site are for the 4-wire flat plug style. Do you have a harness for the 7-wire round plug? Thanks

To provide a 7-way for your Dakota, you'd first need to install a 4-pole flat like part # 118323. You'd then use the adapter provided in the # ETBC7 brake controller install kit to convert the 4-pole to a 7-way.
The adapter would plug into the 4-pole, leaving 4 wires remaining. The black wire and the blue wire would be extended with wire included in the kit and ran under the vehicle to the engine compartment. The black wire would run to a 40 amp breaker provided in the kit, and then to the positive battery terminal to provide a 12 volt feed to the trailer, while the blue wire passes though the firewall into the cab to connect to the blue brake controller wire that carries the output voltage from the brake controller. The purple adapter wire usually attaches to the reverse light circuit and the white wire grounds to the truck.
For a brake controller, I'd recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The controller would typically mount to the underside of the dash to the right of the steering wheel, within easy reach of the driver.
For a hitch, I'd recommend the Curt Class III hitch, part # C13280. If you don't already have one, the # AMSC2 ball mount is recommended with a standard pin and clip like # PC3. You'd also need the appropriately sized trailer ball, like # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball.
I've linked you to install videos for the hitch and the brake controller, as well as to a help article showing how the install kit is used.
