The usual 7-way plug that is installed on a trailer is actually the male plug, such as # A7WCB or # H20046 that includes 8-feet of wiring. These fit into the female socket on the tow vehicle, such as the part # HM48470 that you referenced. Sockets like the HM48470 are normally used on the tow vehicle side only.
Wiring in a trailer-side plug like the Hopkins # H20046 is usually simplified by use of a junction box, which is an enclosed (protected) connection point for the wiring where the wires from the trailer can join the wires from the trailer connector. You can use part # 38656 for this purpose, along with ring terminals like # 44-5310A from 3M.
