Using Draw-Tite # 24747 Class I Hitch on 2006 Mustang to Carry Wheelchair and Tow a Trailer

Question:

Hello, I'm interested in putting a hitch on the back of my 2006 ford mustang. I have an electric wheelchair lift. The brand name is Harmar and serial number is 198922. Could you please help figure out exactly which wiring harness would work best with the Draw-Tite you sell. I really dont know much about it and dont want to get the wrong one. I also have a trailer and would like the option of hooking it up even if I never do. The trailer has a hook up that is round that plugs into most trucks and SUV,s. The wheelchair lift only has a flat plug with just four posts. Sorry for the long question but I just wanted to explain best I could. Thank You very much

The Draw-Tite # 24747 is a Class I receiver, which means it is capable of using accessories weighing a maximum of 200 lbs. This is the case for all the hitches available for your Mustang. Exceeding this capacity will damage the hitch and would likely damage the points on the frame where the hitch connects. I'm sorry to say that unless your wheelchair and its carrier have a combined weight less than 200 lbs, you won't be able to use that particular vehicle to carry it. Using your trailer to carry it would be an option, however.

If the tongue weight of the trailer you are wanting to tow is 200 lbs or less, and the trailer when loaded weighs less than the 1000 lb towing capacity of the Mustang, towing a trailer will be no problem. It sounds like your trailer has a 7-way connector, which should look like the photo I provided. If this is the case, you'll first need to install a 4-pole trailer connector on your Mustang, like part # 18252.

How you proceed from here will depend on how the trailer is equipped. If the trailer does NOT have brakes, you can use the # 37185 adapter to convert the 4-pole to a 7-way. The adapter has a 4-pole that would plug into the 4-pole you installed, and would have 4 remaining wires. The white wire would be grounded to the vehicle frame, and the rest of the wires which aren't needed would be bundled up out of the way.

If the trailer does have electric brakes, and you want them to actuate, you'd need to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160 using our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. I've linked the install instructions for the ETBC7 kit, and an install video showing the kit being used to install a brake controller in a Ford Ranger. The install on your Mustang would be very similar.

Your hitch includes a ball mount, but you'll also need the appropriately-sized trailer ball. For a 2 inch ball you'll need # 19258 or # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball.
