The hitch for your 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix is the Curt Class II hitch # C12225. This hitch has a 1-1/4-inch receiver opening and a maximum trailer weight rating of 3500-lbs, which should be plenty for a small rental trailer. This hitch fits several versions of the Grand Prix, the GT Coupe, the sedan and the GTP.
Many of our customer choose to tackle hitch installation on their own, but in the case of your vehicle some drilling is required. You also need a torque wrench to tighten the included bolts to the manufacturer's specifications as shown in the instructions. Most local auto service shops (that have a vehicle lift) should be able to handle the installation for you.
Along with the hitch you will need ball mount # 36065 (which includes a pin and clip) and either 2-inch hitch ball # 19258 or 1-7/8-inch size # 19256, depending on the size of the coupler on the trailer you rent. You will also need a trailer wiring harness to operate the lights on the trailer. You can use Draw-Tite harness # 18252 which simply splices into your Grand Prix's tail light wiring. This kit includes a tester to make it easy to identify the correct wires on the vehicle.
I suggest you check your Grand Prix owner's manual to confirm its towing capacity. The linked articles on towing will be helpful too.
