Parts Needed For Flat Towing A 024 GMC Canyon WT4

Question:

Hello there! Just bought a 2024 GMC Canyon AT4 that I am going to be towing behind a 2021 Coachman Leprechaun with the 7.3 V8 Gas engine. This vehicle replaces my Kia Soul and were trying to figure out what we need to make our new tow behind safe to transport. Beings the pickup is heavier, I was lookin at Blue Ox BX4370 Ascent Aluminum Tow Bar 7,500 lbs and wondered what your thoughts were about that tow bar? Ive also been told that I will need a battery disconnect switch and maybe some diodes to allow the the Blue Ox wiring harness to work correctly with the LED rear lights. We will be utilizing an RVI Brake 3 system as well. Any recommendations on equipment and/or procedures to make this a safe viable tow behind would greatly be appreciated. Thanks! Brett

Hey Brett, congrats on the new truck. I can definitely help with this.

The Blue Ox Ascent Non-Binding Tow Bar # BX4370 is a great choice for pulling your new 2024 GMC Canyon. The 2024 Canyon has a curb weight of 4,670 lbs, so the 7,500 lb rating will be more than enough. The Ascent tow bar has aluminum arms which make it lightweight and durable. Here is a full list of the parts I recommend for flat towing your vehicle:

- Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # BLU85CR

- Blue Ox Ascent Non-Binding Tow Bar - RV Mount - 2" Hitch - 7,500 lbs # BX4370

- Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267

- Roadmaster Battery Disconnect with Switch for Towed Vehicle w/ Flat Tow Brake System - Gas # RM-766

That will cover all of the main components. The diode kit and will be permanently installed on the truck. When you are ready to tow you will be able to hook up, plug in and go. This will all be compatible with the RVI system you mentioned, although we do not carry the RVI here. I recommend using the Demco # SM99251 instead, but it is totally up to you and your preference. I just like the durability and convenience of the Demco system.

Keep in mind that the battery disconnect is a requirement, and one disconnect is needed for each starter battery. You may also need a drop hitch like part # BLU28XR to compensate for any height differences between the base plate arms and the hitch on your RV.

You will find install videos for these parts linked below. Feel free to reach out if there is anything else I can do for you.
