A rooftop-mounted cargo basket such as the discontinued Rola # 59504 will always generate some level of noise at highway speeds. This is also true of roof racks, and some rack makers including Rola offer types with elliptical (wing-shaped) aerodynamic crossbars to help reduce this noise level.

Some cargo baskets like the Curt # C18115 include a larger wind-deflecting fairing on the front edge to help guide airflow up and over the basket to reduce noise.

Apart from adjusting the placement of your loaded cargo there is not much that can be done to eliminate the wind noise from a rooftop basket. Moving the loaded items as far rearward as possible often helps.

Enclosed plastic cargo boxes, such as the SportRack # SR7011, typically offer slightly quieter performance than baskets and also provide more protection from weather for your loaded cargo. They also offer locks to keep your property secure.

If you would like to consider a rooftop cargo box please advise the model year of your Dodge Journey and what type of roof hardware is on it (is it a factory rack from Dodge or an aftermarket unit added later) and I will be glad to offer a suggestion. The linked article will give you more information.

Although it will not address the noise problem, we often find customers that use cargo carriers like to use a tire step to make it easier to load and unload the cargo items. HitchMate TireStep # HE4040 is a great example of this type of handy accessory.
