Tow Bar Recommendation for a 1990 Honda Civic with a Standard Roadmaster Base Plate Kit
Question:
Have 1990 Honda Civic with RM 508-1 base plates. Will the # 501 tow bar fit? Is there a better choice for a tow bar, if so, what? Thanks,

Expert Reply:
Yes, the RoadMaster StowMaster Car-Mounted Tow Bar # RM-501 that you referenced is compatible with the Roadmaster Classic Base Plate Kit # 508-1.
The StowMaster would work well for you, if it were me though I would go with a Roadmaster Falcon 2 part # RM-520. This tow bar would store on the RV so when you disconnect your 1990 Honda Civic you would fold up the tow bars on the back of your RV instead of having to remove the tow bars from your vehicle and RV every time you needed to wanted to drive the Civic.
Aside from those two products there are several other components needed for a safe flat-towing setup.
For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground.
For lighting you can use the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155, and not have to worry about cutting and splicing into the vehicle wiring.
And finally, most states now require supplemental braking in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake proportional system, # RM-9400, that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the two vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
I have included a couple of helpful links to our articles on flat towing for you. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for more specific information on flat towing your vehicle.
