Because brake controllers are not vehicle specific, you can certainly use the # 90885 Prodigy P2 brake controller on your 2013 Explorer. If your Explorer has the factory 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper, your installation will be very simple. The # 3035-P connector will plug into the connector under the dash, which will either be just to the left of the center console or behind the glove box. The connector will be gray in color.

If your vehicle has the 4-pole trailer connector, you'll still plug the controller in under the dash, but you'll need the # 37185 adapter to convert the 4-pole to a 7-way. The 4 pole on the adapter plugs into the adapter, leaving four additional wires. The white wire grounds to the vehicle frame, the purple wire is typically connected into the reverse lamp circuit, but unless your trailer has reverse lights or you're planning on towing a boat trailer with a hydraulic actuating coupler, you will not need that connection. You can simply coil up the wire out of the way. The blue wire carries the output from the brake controller, and the black wire carries 12-volt power to any trailer mounted accessories that might need it. On the drivers side frame rail, you should find a blue and a orange or red wire. The blue wire from the adapter connects to the blue wire on the frame rail, and the black adapter wire connects to the red or orange wire. You might need to lengthen the wires using 10 gauge wire like 10-2-1.
