Brake Controller And 7-Way Connector Recommendation For 2003 Subaru Forester

Question:

I need to install a controller on my 2003 Forester to link with electric brakes on a T@B travel trailer. Ill use the Tekonsha P3 if I can find a good place to mount it. Ive viewed plenty of your great videos but still need advice. 1. As you know the Forester has a 4-way connection in the rear. Can I plug the 4 to 7 way adapter supplied with part ETBC7 directly into the 4-way connection plug thats stock for the Forester or do I also need to use the T-One 4 way connector 118461? Is the Curt C55370 connector, which costs a few dollars less equivalent to the T-One? 2. All of your videos show how to run wires from the rear to the front using an outside route. I live in Minnesota, where things get pretty nasty. Though some installers tell me that the outside route is fine, others tell me that exposing the wires to the elements is not a great idea. An inside route means pulling some panels, which may be an issue, but in your opinion is it a better way to go to protect the connection? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

The Tekonsha Brake Controller, part # 90195 is a great brake controller for your electric brakes on your travel trailer. Since you said your 2003 Subaru Forester has the 4-way connector at the rear of the vehicle, the Universal Installation Kit, part # ETBC7 will work well for you. The additional 4-way connector will not be necessary. I have attached a link to an installation video for you.

I can certainly understand the concern with running wires where they are subjected to the harsh weather. We do offer a wire loom that can protect the wires you run from the rear to the front of the vehicle. You can order the wire loom by the foot using part # 459075-1. In my opinion the wire loom would provide plenty of protection for the wire.

When installing the # ETBC7, extra wire may be needed to run to the front of long vehicles. I recommend getting some additional wire to run the length of your vehicle with part # 10-2-1.

Also, when installing and making any electrical connections it is always recommended to use dielectric grease like part# 11755. This helps keep moisture out of the connectors and prevent corrosion.

I have attached a few articles you may find helpful when installing a brake controller. You will want to check your owners manual or with your dealership when to find the rated towing capacity for your Forester.
