Recommended Replacement For An Atwood G6A-7 RV Water Heater

Question:

My water heater tank split open it is a G6A-7 I know they don’t make them anymore. What would you recommend for a replacement or could we just weld the split?

At this point you'd be much better off replacing the unit entirely, but newer units are a bit smaller than the prior models so you'll likely need to do a bit of framing to fill in the gaps and properly mount the new unit. Tankless systems are much more efficient and can provide hotter water for much longer than their tanked counterparts. For a bit of perspective the G6A-7 has an 8,800btu rating and will give you roughly 12 galls of hot water per hour. A tankless unit like the Furrion # FR98SR has a 60,000btu rating and can produce 144 gallons of hot water per hour.

Depending on the size of your cutout hole you might need a different access door so I've listed the different sizes below:

16" x 16" # FR98SR
16" x 18" # FR48SR
18" x 18" # FR68SR

You'll also want to use some butyl tape # AL28FJ on the backside of the unit and access door mounting flanges and some non-sag sealant # 344270341437-1 around the outer edge of the access to to prevent any water from leaking in.
