Can The Demco Stay-In-Play Be Transferred From One Vehicle To Another?
Question:
Hi. We tow a vehicle 4-down behind our motorhome. I have an SMI/Demco STAY-IN-PLAY DUO braking system installed in a now-wrecked 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara. It was origially installed in a Ford Focus in 2016 and transferred to the Suzuki in 2019. I need a braking system for our newinch 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara. The system was working fine the last time we used it on the 2006 a few month ago. I am working with my insurance company to get authorization to remove the undamaged STAY-IN-PLAY DUO from the wrecked car. If I get such authorization, first, is it worth while to remove the major parts from the car and install them on the new or have there been significant improvements in the STAY-IN-PLAY since 2016? Second, most of the wiring, connectors, and tubing will probably have to be replaced, and maybe the break away unit, for a new install. It seems to all be easily replaceable, but do you sell a transfer or re-install accessory kit to save me from having to put together my own kit? When I installed the system in our 2006 Suzuki, it was difficult to find a location near the engine compartment in which the operating unit would fit. I finally squeezed it in above the radiator and under the grill. The 2009 Grand Vitara had some minor design changes to the front fascia and to the body so I may have to find a new location for the operating unit. Do you have any experience installing the STAY-IN-PLAY DUO in 2009 Grand Vitaras that you could pass on or have videos you could point me to? Thank you,

There have not been any major changes to the Stay-In-Play system since 2016, so I believe it certainly would be worthwhile (and a $$$ saver) to remove the major parts from the now-wrecked car. Provided you can get that done for a reasonable cost. There is a Re-Install Kit # SM6270 that is made specifically for this purpose. This will include all of the components you need to transfer your system to a new vehicle, including a new breakaway kit.
I am afraid that we we have not gotten out hands on any model year Suzuki Grand Vitara at our shop here in Missouri. So finding room for the operating unit may be the tricky part. Generally even on smaller vehicles you can find room somewhere under the hood. I am sorry to say we really do not have any videos that will be of any help here.
