To wire your 1996 Intrepid you will need an Upgraded Circuit Protected Taillight Converter Hardwire Kit with 4 Pole End (Includes Testers), item # 119178KIT. Use the circuit tester, included in the kit, to hard wire the converter in behind the vehicle taillights. Once this is completed you can use the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, to complete the 7-way wiring.

The four extra wires on the ETBC7 will be wired as follows, white will go to a suitable ground, blue will connect to the brake controller output wire, black will connect to the vehicle positive battery post through a 40 amp circuit breaker, item # PK54540, and the yellow wire will either connect to the reverse light circuit on the vehicle or to auxillary power which ever your trailer requires. The reverse light connection is usually made behind the taillights.

If you removed the 7-Way connector from the 1997 Intrepid and are wiring it to the 1996 vehicle you can use the wiring diagram on our wiring page and remove the 4-Way trailer connector from the converter wiring harness. Remember that you are looking at the connection points on the inside of the connector in the diagram. We have the wiring you will need to install your existing connector on the 1996 Intrepid (see links), and you will need a circuit tester, item # PTW2993, if you do not have one. You will also need a 20- or 30-amp circuit breaker (see link) for your brake controller, which is included in the # 5506 installation kits, whichever the brake controller and your trailer requires.
