Troubleshooting an Integrated Brake Controller in a 2016 GMC 3500 with a BrakeRite Adapter
Question:
I have a 2016 GMC 3500HD with IBC Integrated Brake Controller. My boat trailer has a Dexter Brakerite hydraulic unit on it. The brakes worked fine with a P3 controller on my 1995 Suburban but the ITB on the GMC doesnt recognize the EOH on the boat trailer. I installed a Dexter BrakeRite SD Adapter for Ford/Chevy Integral Brake Controllers and now I get a service brake notification when connected I used to get this intermittently before i installed the adapter, but now get it all the time. I would like to use the ITB if there is trouble shooting that can be done to figure out why the ITB isnt working with the SB Adapter. If it just isnt going to work, then I could install a P3 controller and rewire the truck for that, but that is a distant second choice. Thanks

You have the Dexter BrakeRite SD Adapter for Ford/Chevy Integral Brake Controllers # T4845900 which is not the correct adapter. Since you have a Dexter Brakerite actuator, you would need the Adapter Module for BrakeRite Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # DX35FR.
The SD adapter you currently have is for the Titan BrakeRite II SD.
You can also check to see if your truck has a hydraulic brake setting for the integrated brake controller, sometimes there is a hydraulic setting that needs to be selected to work correctly.
And to be completely honest, integrated brake controllers are notorious for having issues with hydraulic brakes. If you continue to have issues, I would not hesitate to switch back to your P3.
