Inspecting Axle/Hub On Tandem Axle Trailer w/ Single Tire Showing Excessive Wear On 1 Edge Of Tire

Question:

5th wheel tire - Front tire on curb side of RV is wearing on the outer edge. The other 3 are wearing normally. When I place a straight edge across the rear and front tires, a 3/4inch gap is at the leading edge of the front tire, [the tire is closer to the frame]. I know this sounds weird since the back edge of the front tire lines up pretty good with the rear tire. I plan to pull the trailer up the driveway some to see if this straightens out at all.

You want to position your trailer on flat level ground when inspecting the trailer for any alignment issues. Since you mentioned the issue being on the one wheel and already seeing abnormal wear you will want to first raise this tire off the ground and check for any play in the hub on the spindle. If you are able to wobble the tire on the hub this means you will most likely have a bearing issue which needs addressed. Since the wear is on the curb side this tells me the inner bearing is most likely the cause if you do feel any play in the hub.

If you do not have any play on your hubs or see any noticeable wear on the bearings and races it could be your spindle became bent. At this point I recommend visiting a trailer shop to have them inspect your axle. They will be able to determine if your entire axle will need replaced or if the spindle can be repaired.
