Troubleshooting Braking Delay When Using The Tekonsha Prodigy P3

Question:

I have the Tekonsha P3 for 2 years now. About 7 months ago the unit started giving me a low voltage message randomly. I checked all the connections and looked for bad spots on my trailer wiring but found nothing. Cleaned the connectors and even replaced the trailer side 7 way just in case. The issue now does it almost every time now. Ran out of options. I took it to a trailer place to look at my truck and they are seeing a 2.5 second delay to the brakes before the power actually ramps up. That is definitely not good. I do notice Im getting pushed around by the trailer now so the brakes are practically obsolete. Is it a bad controller? Thanks

That is certainly odd. There should be no time delay when using a proportional controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. The first thing I recommend doing is taking a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 and testing the red wire behind the brake controller. It should be getting power immediately when the brakes are applied.

Also check your gain setting. Try turning the gain all the way up and seeing if you still detect a delay. Also check that your manual override is working correctly.

Also make sure the controller is mounted correctly. it must be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel to work correctly.

If you check all of this and the issue persists, I think it is safe to say that the controller needs to be replaced.
