Can I Use The Hitch Adapter HTAD With A Thule 4 Bike Rack?
Question:
Hi. I just got a new Audi with a 1-1/4 hitch. I have a Thule 4 bike rack that mounts to a 2 hitch on our other car, and Im trying to figure out if theres an adapter I could put on the 1-1/4 hitch to be able to use the rack on the new car. It looks like this HDAT would work but I see some comments around reduced weight and potential rattle. Can you please confirm if this would work for 4 bikes and potentially a heavier ebike or 2 in the future and would fit well without rattle, or if theres a different product that would be better? Also, is there a way to secure the hitch adapter similar to the lock for the bolt for Thule rack? Thank you.

I do not recommend using the adapter # HTAD in this case. While it will expand your hitch to a 2", you will be severely limiting your carrying capacity. Our rule of Thumb is that the use of an adapter like the # HTAD will reduce your tongue weight capacity by half. This mostly has to do with leverage, and the potential for rattle. So if the 1-1/4" hitch on your Audi is rated for 200 lbs, you will be limited to only 100 lbs. This would include the weight of the adapter itself, your bike rack and your bikes. Also with a 1-1/4" hitch it is not recommended to carry more than 2 bikes, even without an adapter.
Anytime you use an adapter or extender in your hitch you are opening up a lot more potential for rattle. We can use anti rattle devices like part # MPG908 to reduce play, but this may not eliminate all of it.
If you need to haul heavier bikes using this 1-1/4" hitch on your Audi, I recommend using the Thule EasyFold XT # TH903202. This can hold 2 bikes weighing up to 65 lbs a piece. This is one of the most versatile racks on the market. A built in ramp make loading bikes a breeze. The rack also folds up for compact storage, and has a handle and wheels that makes moving the rack extremely convenient. I have included a link to a review video for you to take a look at.
