Can a Weight Distribution System Let You Tow a Trailer Heavier Than

Question:

If my tow vehicle has a max hitch weight capacity of 500 lb. and the tongue weight of my trailer is the same weight. 500 lb. and I was to add an equalizer hitch. How much weight could I expect to be transferred off of my tow vehicle hitch to the trailer axle and the tow vehicle front axle?

This is a great question but I don't have a direct answer I can give you. So weight distribution systems do distribute some of the trailer's tongue weight up to the front axle of the tow vehicle but it's hard to say exactly by how much as there are too many variables. Typically there is a second set of towing capacities on trailer hitches that is higher if a weight distribution system is used though so you should check to see if you can find that. It might be on the hitch's sticker or it could be in the owners manual.

If the hitch is rated for weight distribution but there isn't a second set of higher towing capacities you would be limited to 500 lb tongue weight regardless of if you use a WD or not.

For an Equal-i-zer system that would be ideal for a trailer with 500 lb tongue weight the kit you would want is the part # EQ37061ET.
