2009 Dodge Journey Brake Controller Installation with a Factory 7-Way

Question:

I have a 2009 Dodge Journey with a Mopar hitch and Mopar 7 pin wire harness, that were installed by the dealer when we bought it new. We just bought a new pop up camper with electric brake and I would like to install a brake controller. How would I go about installing one of your brake controllers with the Mopar harness?

The Mopar wiring harness includes the power line to the electric brakes. The wiring harness should be hard wired direct to the control module in the engine compartment. The brake wire may be tied off somewhere nearby as it does not get wired to the module.

Another option would be to run the blue brake output wire from the Tekonsha P2 brake controller # 90885 to the brake output circuit of the 7-way. You could use the 10 Gauge Primary Wire # 10-1-1 for this. This is sold in 1 foot increments, you would need to order a quantity of that is the amount of feet you need. Basically you would need to attach one end of the wire to the blue wire from the brake controller and then route the other end of the wire all the way back to the brake output circuit of your 7-way.

The rest of the wires of the # 90885 would install as follows. The red wire will need to be run to the cold side of the brake switch, in other words the circuit on the brake switch that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied.

The black wire will get run to the positive side of the battery through a circuit breaker like our part # 9506P. And the white wire will run to the negative side of the battery.
