Tips For Replacing 7-way Connector On Boat Trailer That Uses Non-Industry Standard Wire Colors
Question:
Can you help please? I wish to install back up lights on my bass boat trailer and replace my trailer side 7 Way while I am at it. However...There are 8 wires currently coming out of my existing 7 way and they are not the colors reflected in your products. There are currently 6 wires connected. These are 2 white, two brown, a yellow and a green. And there are two wires that are not connected. These are another white and a blue. So all together, coming from the trailer side 7 way plug, I have 3 white, 2 brown, a yellow, a green and a blue. So I am thoroughly confused as to which new 7 way with jacketed cable to buy and then where to connect the submersible back up lights I intend to buy.

I'd be happy to help, but as we often see, your boat trailer is not wired with the standard wire colors.
This is pretty common when it comes to trailers, so what you need to do is before removing the 7-way connector on the trailer, plug the connector into your tow vehicle and use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test each of the wires mentioned. A tip we use when doing this is use some blue painters tape on each wire, and write on the tape the function so you don't get things messed up.
For a new 7-way cord I the # H20042 you were looking at will look fine, and it has the following functions by wire color:
White Wire Ground
Red Wire Left Turn and Brake
Brown Wire Right Turn and Brake
Green Wire Tail Lights
Blue Wire Brake Power
Black Wire 12 volt (hot lead)
Yellow Wire Reverse
Just connect the existing trailer wires to this harness function to function.
