What Is The Purpose Of The Rubber Boots On Certain Tow Bar Arms

Another question on tow bars. Is it necessary to have the rubber boots on the arms and is there any advantage to them. The Blue Ox Alpha 2 6500K has them but the etrailer SD 6000K does not.

The rubber boots seen on the Blue Ox Alpha 2 Non-Binding Tow Bar # BX7380 just help to prevent debris from getting into the outer arms when the inner arms retract back in. It's not really that big of a problem since you wouldn't really be off-roading a lot while flat towing and kick up dirt onto the tow bar but it is nice to have.
An alternative to this would be to use some dry silicone spray like # RM-747 on the arms of the etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e47ZR to lubricate the arms and prevent any debris from sticking. Simply spray it on and working the arms in and out a bit and you'll be protected.
