Replacement Axle and Suspension System For a Small Boat Trailer With 55" Wide Axle
Question:
I recently got a new trailer with a boat. I am working on the trailer and need new springs. I have no info on this trailer and not in the best shape. The spring brakets are movable bolt on but I may want a complete kit with brackets. The axle Im quessing is only rated at 1000 - 1250 lbs. It is 1-1/4inch od square w/4 bolts on hubs. The trailer is 4foot wide but axle width measured at 55inch hub to hub face and 43inch spring leaf position. The leaf springs on it measured 33inch eye to eye, 1-3/4inch wide and had a total of 6 leafs. Not sure weight/load but seamed exsesive from everything I am finding. I want a new set up. I am ok with only 1000 lb limit. It will be hauling a 14foot alluminum v hull boat and motor maybe 500 lb max weight. The trailer is steel at 4foot w x 16foot long, That includes tounge. Trailer frame and parts probibly around 200 lbs. Can you help me choose the best option. Having more weight load wouldnt be bad. 1250 to 2000 lb max. I know I would have to change the axle but may be ok with that.

I have a couple options for you. First our closest axle to what you have is the CE Smith Trailer Axle # CE33201GA which has a hub face to hub face measurement of 57-1/2" so it will make the trailer wider. For leaf springs the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # e77SR are going to be our closest to your weight rating and length. This will require you to move your existing hangers to accommodate the new leaf springs. Finally you will need 2 Hubs # AKIHUB-440-2-G-EZ-2K, a U-Bolt Kit # CE23102 and Shackle Kit # K71-358-00.
I recommend using the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs # A12RS440 as you will be able to replace all your suspension components in an upgraded axles kit. This system will bolt to your frame rails and give you an independent suspension. The system is rated for 1,200lbs which is much closer to the weight rating you are looking for and uses rubber AEON progressive springs which will provide for a better ride quality than standard leaf springs.
