Recommended Weight Distribution System and Tongue Weight Scale for a 8,000 lbs Travel Trailer
Question:
Hey. I have a weight distribution and tongue weight percentage question. I have a 2016 coachman freedom express 292bhds. Let’s say my tongue weight is 800lbs when sitting by itself and total trailer weight is 8,000 pounds so 10 tongue weight I want to achieve when towing. If I hooked up a weight distribution hitch to it and it distributes some of that weight onto my tow vehicle axles, does that make the 800 pound number go down in my tongue weight percentage calculation? Or would I still be at 10 and good to go?

Expert Reply:
A weight distribution system will not change the tongue weight of the trailer. Tongue weight is typically 10% - 15% of your trailer's total weight and that number doesn't change when connected to your truck by a standard ball mount or weight distribution system.
You can use the BetterWeigh Mobile Tongue Weight and Payload Scale for OBD II item # C51701 to accurately measure your trailer's tongue weight. This plugs into your trucks OBD II port and then provides the information via an app on your phone.
If you're in need of a weight distribution system, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control item # FA92-00-1200. This system has a 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs tongue weight range which will be perfect for your 8,000 lbs travel trailer.
