Driving Speed and Snow Chain Lifespan When Used on 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 4x4

All snow chains require reduced driving speed. Typically manufacturers suggest speed not exceed 30 mph when chains are installed. Driving faster than this increases the risk of damaging and/or dislodging the chains, which could lead to damage to your vehicle and/or personal injury to you or other motorists. No tire chain product allows for normal driving speed in snowy or icy conditions.

The rate and degree of wear on any given snow chain is a function of many factors, including but not limited to the particular vehicle, tire type and size, driving habits, road conditions, weather and the type of chain material. Any chain driven on bare pavement will wear much faster than one used only on snow-covered roads (and driving with chains on bare pavement can interfere with your ability to control the vehicle). Generally it is recommended to replace snow chains once wear exceeds 45 percent of the original material thickness. In general cable-type chains will usually have a shorter lifespan than link-type chains.

Your 2014 Silverado 3500 HD could be equipped with any of seven different tire sizes. The correct choice of chains for your truck will depend on your tire size. The link provided will take you to our main page for tire chains for your vehicle. Once you select your tire size you will see all options that will fit that tire size. You can also use the filters at the left side of the page to limit the product results to those best suited for your intended application. As examples, there are chains for on-road-use only, off-road-use only or a combination; chains that offer rim protection and chains that offer a variety of installation methods. Generally it is possible to use either one or two pairs of chains on vehicles unless the manufacturer specifically prohibits this; refer to your owners manual or local dealership for any special considerations about use of tire chains.

I have linked a helpful article that covers a great deal of important information that can help guide you through the process of considering your best options. The article includes important basics, safety considerations and a listing of state-by-state laws. A second linked article reviews the various chain product lines offered by Pewag, including the on-road-only Brenta-C series intended for 4 x 4 trucks.
