How Do You Determine Trailer Tongue Weight With a Curt Weight Distribution Hitch?
Question:
Hi Etrailer, I have a Curt weight distribution hitch 17063 installed on my 2021 Ford Ranger. I have a Dune Sport 2 axle toy hauler. Its unladen weight is ~4,500 lbs and its GVWR is 10,400lbs. I measured the tongue weight using one of your gauges attached to the jack stand at 1,000 lbs. When attached to my Ranger via the Curt weight distribution hitch, how much tongue weight is actually on the Ranger and how much is transferred back to the trailer? I want to make sure I dont exceed the Rangers maximum tongue weight of 750 lbs. Thanks

Expert Reply:
With your 2021 Ford Ranger having a maximum tongue weight rating of 750lbs you will not be able to tow your Dune Sport toy hauler. The 750lb rating is the tongue weight allowed before adding a weight distribution hitch. While the Curt Weight Distribution # C17063 will distribute the weight across your 2021 Ford Ranger you are still exceeding the maximum allowed tongue weight for your receiver. You will need a bigger truck with a receiver rated for at least the 1,000lbs or higher if you intend to add more cargo, or a smaller trailer with a tongue weight below 750lbs and total weight below the maximum 7,500lbs the Ranger is capable of hauling.
