I have not installed this item at the rear of the bed near the drivers side taillight. You will have to measure or more likely stick something similar in size up between the bedside and the fender to see if there will be clearance.
I went out to the warehouse and pulled the Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck 90 Degree Wiring Harness with 7-Pole Connector, item # 50-97-410, and the area needed behind the sheet metal for the connector to mount is 2 inches round by 3-1/2 inches deep. If you took a small piece of two by four about two inches long and can test fit it where you want to mount the connector you should be able to tell if there will be clearance for the connector near the rear taillight.
I went out and checked on my Dodge, no Fords on the lot today, and there is plenty of room inside the bed on the drivers side near the rear.
This item is not available with a shorter length at this time. The extra length can be tied up, with cable ties, out of the way.
