Can Yakima Tracks Be Cut to Install on 2014 Honda CR-V Bare Roof

Question:

I want to mount Yakima tracks to the bare roof no rails of my 2014 Honda CR-V gen4. The roof ditch is narrower at the rear and wider up front. To mount the tracks in between the roof ditch and parallel the front would be right against the sunroof opening. Im assuming the sunroof opening is a weaker point so Id like to avoid that. Im wondering if I could cut the 54 inch tracks in half. Then mount the 27 inch sections wider up front and narrower in the back. Or 20 inch up front and 34 inch in the back. I would have to buy a couple extra end caps for the track and maybe a few more plusnuts. Is there a minimum number of inches of track and minimum number of plusnuts I should have to support each landing pad/crossbar?

Thanks for reaching out!

You can definitely modify the Yakima 54" Tracks for Roof Racks # Y01127 by cutting them and installing them in different sections, yes. To complete this installation you'll need 2 more sets of the EndCaps # Y8810103 and you may or may not need more of the PlusNut Hardware # Y8810102. The installation instructions say to have the PlusNut hardware installed at every other hole so it's just a matter of you deciding how much of the tracks you need. To complete the roof rack system you need the following:

60" JetStream Crossbars - # Y00426
SkyLine Towers - # Y53TR
Landing Pad 1 - # Y00221 (you need 2 of this)

The tracks measure 1-5/8" wide which is typically a little wider than what most vehicles have for that ditch you're talking about. If you're wanting to install a Yakima roof rack that's designed specifically for your 2014 Honda CR-V then we have a clamp-on system that uses the following for a bare roof like what you have:

60" JetStream Crossbars - # Y00426
BaseLine Towers - # Y28TR
BaseClips - # Y06148 AND # Y06152

No matter which way you go, we also have a lock core kit # Y07204 you can add to the SkyLine or BaseLine towers to lock the roof rack to your vehicle.

Attached is a video of the BaseLine system installed on a 2016 CR-V for you to check out.
